Legacy started the season in a quarterback battle.

A star emerged from it.

Kullen Lerma threw for three more touchdowns as the Lightning beat Horizon 42-13 to win 5A League 2 Friday night.

The breakout junior emerged as the starting quarterback in Week 2 and has thrown for 1,149 yards and rushed for 724 while totaling 24 touchdowns to just two interceptions this fall.

In his latest showing, he threw two touchdowns to Tyler Madden, another to Trey Javorek, and rushed for 84 yards as No. 9 Legacy won its seventh straight.

Celebrating league titles along with the Lightning in Week 9 were local teams Erie and Fairview. The Tigers beat Longmont 44-21 at Everly-Montgomery Field to claim 4A League 2. The Knights won 5A League 3 with a 42-26 win over Fossil Ridge.

Broomfield, Lyons and Frederick can win league titles by winning out. Holy Family and Mead need help in their league races.

Teams from the region finished the week 8-4 through Friday night. Lyons, Mead, Niwot, Monarch and Prospect Ridge Academy played Saturday.

Below are the week’s highlights and scores.

Thursday night

Skyline 40, Grand Junction Central 14: Kaiden Box threw for four touchdowns, two to Logan Miller of 81 and 72 yards, and Giancarlo Barron added four — four! — interceptions as the Falcons (5-4, 1-2 4A League 1) emphatically bounced back from a 57-0 loss to Loveland last week.

Rah Carson added two touchdowns on the ground and caught another in the win. The Falcons’ defense forced seven turnovers.

Skyline finishes the regular season at home against Greeley Central Friday.

Silver Creek 56, Greeley Central 26: Cole Rogers rushed for a career-high 234 yards and five touchdowns as the Raptors (4-5, 1-2 4A League 2) snapped a three-game skid.

Rogers’ previous career high came Week 1 against Prairie View, totaling 222 yards and four scores.

Resetting it Thursday, he needed just 26 carries to cross the 200-yard milestone.

Eli Mires added 163 yards and a TD in the win.

Silver Creek is at Monarch next Friday.

Holy Family 35, Fort Morgan 13: Chase McNaughton rushed for 200 yards and two scores on just 14 carries, also had a TD reception, and the No. 8 Tigers (5-3, 2-1 3A League 5) won for the second time in five days to stay alive in their league title chase.

Rylan Cooney added a touchdown through the air and on the ground for the Tigers, who are a game back of Lutheran in the league standings with two games to play. Connor Henkel had a kick return TD, Dom Gabriel had 12 tackles and Jace Gunderson and Connor Neely each had an interception.

The Tigers are at Lincoln Oct. 29.

Byers 48, Justice 8: Clayton Hobbs threw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Donnovan Thompson in Justice’s sixth straight loss.

The Phoenix (1-7, 0-4 A-8 League 5) end their season at home against Gilpin County Oct. 29.

Friday night

Erie 44, Longmont 21: In a game to decide the 4A League 2 champ, Blake Barnett threw for three touchdowns and ran for another two as Erie (5-4, 3-0) beat Longmont (4-5, 3-1).

Barnett had passing scores of 45, 22 and 23 yards and ran for scores of 10 and 6. He has a total 31 touchdowns (18 passing, 11 rushing, one reception, one punt return) on the season.

Dylan Firebaugh added a 42-yard interception return for a score in the win.

Cole Gaddis crossed 1,000 rushing yards on the season in the loss, running for 120 yards and three scores. Bryson Strandberg had 10 receptions for 109 yards.

Erie hosts Greeley West Thursday, while Longmont is at home against Loveland.

Broomfield 21, Fruita Monument 14: Cole LaCrue threw his 20th touchdown of the season and rushed for his 13th score as the No. 2 Eagles (9-0, 3-0 4A League 7) survived their first true test of the season against No. 8 Fruita Monument (6-3, 1-2).

Broomfield had won by at least three touchdowns through the first eight weeks.

It will play for a league title at Heritage Friday.

Staying perfect Friday, Brent Harris broke a scoreless game with a 3-yard rushing score with 5:28 left in the third quarter.

LaCrue put the Eagles back in front when he connected with Anthony Cobb in the final minute of the quarter. The senior QB then sealed things with a 9-yard rushing score with 6:38 remaining.

Frederick 57, Denver North 21: Cruz Zamudio rushed for a pair of scores, Tager Reed threw for two, and the Golden Eagles (6-2, 3-0 3A League 6) stayed perfect in league play.

Teagun Boen added a 37-yard fumble recovery for a score and caught another TD. Gavin Ishmael opened the game with a 32-yard rushing TD and River Lakey kicked in the mercy-rule running clock with 9 minutes left in the third quarter with his seventh TD on the ground this year.

Frederick is at Mead Friday.

Legacy 42, Horizon 13: Lerma threw for three scores, Tyler Anderson rushed for two and Tyler Madden caught two, and the No. 9 Lightning (7-2, 4-0 5A League 2) won a league title.

Their seventh straight victory since starting the year 0-2, Brandon Sanchez added 71 yards and a score on just seven carries. Trey Javorek had 84 yards on just four carries while also catching a TD.

Legacy is at Brighton Friday.

Fairview 42, Fossil Ridge 26: Zach Lewis ran for three more touchdowns to give him 12 on the season as the Knights (8-1, 4-0) won 5A League 3.

Jordan Rechel added two touchdowns in the win.

Football: Fairview dominates Fossil Ridge to win league title

Fairview is at Rocky Mountain Thursday.

Widefield 20, Centaurus 7: Lineman Xavier Valentin-Bradford rushed for his first TD of the season as Centaurus (4-5, 3-2 4A League 8) fell to Widefield (8-1, 5-0).

The Gladiators will play for a league title against Liberty Friday.

The Warriors host Gateway Oct. 29.

Rocky Mountain 42, Boulder 3: The Panthers (1-8, 0-4 5A League 3) lost their eighth straight game.

They’ll end their season Friday, hosting Fort Collins.
