3A League 5

Teams and trends: Fort Morgan, Holy Family, Kennedy, Lincoln, Lutheran and Northfield. Fort Morgan won the Class 3A state championship last season as Lutheran, Holy Family and Northfield all made the playoffs. Lincoln finished its season winless as Kennedy only managed to put together three wins.

Holy Family Tigers

Coach: Mike Gabriel

The Scorecard: The Tigers look forward to what they hope will be another playoff-worthy season a year after playing into the Class 3A quarterfinals. This year, they bring back a host of talent to help lead them toward success, led by junior QB Rylan Cooney, who threw for 1,865 yards in 2021 on 106 completions. He’ll be joined by RB Chase McNaughton (920 all-purpose yards), senior DB/WR Jace Gunderson (49 tackles), senior DB/RB Nic Christoff (48 tackles), senior PK Will Nolan (477 kickoff yards), junior LB/RB Dominic Gabriel (34 tackles), sophomore LB/TE Anderson Obsburn (37 tackles) and sophomore OL/DL Matt Sakkaris.

3A League 6

Teams and trends: Denver North, George Washington, Frederick, Mead, Niwot and Riverdale Ridge. Mead finished runner-up in last year’s Class 3A state playoffs and Frederick played its way to the quarterfinals. George Washington was the only other team to end its season with a winning record.

Frederick Golden Eagles

Coach: Matt Loyd

The Scorecard: The Golden Eagles enter the year with a new name and a new coach. Matt Loyd made the move from 5A Ralston Valley, but the players have only had a couple of months with him to learn his system. Luckily, he has plenty of upperclass talent to help the guys get up to speed: seniors WR/DB Kooper Anderson (447 total yards), RB/DB Cruz Zamudio (1,113 yards), OL/DL Hunter Kenney, OL/DL Gabe Maes, Will Triplett, Lafai Purcell (386 yards), WR/DB Teagun Boen and junior RB/LB Kamarly Davy. The Golden Eagles ended their 2021 campaign in the quarterfinals of the 3A state playoffs.

Mead Mavericks

Coach: Jason Klatt

The Scorecard: The Mavericks fell just short of a state title in 2021 and used that runner-up status to motivate themselves in the offseason. They’ll look to a new quarterback to lead them forward with senior Taylon Adler, who in turn will look for guidance from seniors OL Zach Dibella, RB Sean Medlock (904 total yards), RB Danny Brewington, OL Kannon Garrettson and LB Christian Ayers (88 tackles).

Niwot Cougars

Coach: Nik Blume

The Scorecard: The Cougars will look a bit different this fall as their leading man, junior quarterback Ben Classen, decided to commit to track full time and leave his football jersey behind. Classen had collected 1,104 yards on the pass and the rush while leading the Cougars on defense with 61 tackles. This year, Blume will look to junior Chad Volf to take the leading role and will rely on junior C/DT Nicolas Kemp and junior WR/DB Sergio Pimentel for added leadership.

Class 2A League 1

Teams and trends: Bennett, D’Evelyn, Platte Valley, Prospect Ridge, Valley and Wellington. Platte Valley is the only team in the league that ended 2021 with a winning record as Wellington fields a program for the first time in 59 years.

Prospect Ridge Academy Miners

Coach: Michael Storer

The Scorecard: The Miners made the move up from Class 1A to take on a newer, bigger classification as the interest in the program continues to grow. For the first time, the Miners will be able to host a junior varsity program as varsity tries to rebound and improve from a 1-8 record last fall. They’ll look to a new quarterback in senior Elik Hrivnak as seniors C/DL Ashton LeRoy, DE/TE Chase Schaffer, WR Luis Diaz, MLB Teddy Cundiff, T Vidhura Kumar and junior RB Torin Bennett back him up.
