Boulder High grads Riley, Munro continue to make waves in mountain biking

Pair win national titles at USA Cycling championships in Winter Park

The year’s biggest national event for USA Cycling’s mountain biking division rolled through Winter Park this past weekend, and Boulder’s own Bjorn Riley and Madigan Munro took full advantage of a course in their own backyard.

Riley and Munro, two of the more prominent former members of the Boulder High School mountain biking team, won national titles in the U23 cross country racing divisions on July 23. The top placings continue to add up for the pair.

At the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships, Riley beat out more than 60 other competitors in the men’s U23 cross country race. Training now in Europe with the Trek Vaude team, his time was 1:24:59.

Munro continues to represent Trek Factory Racing, and her mantle continues to fill up with titles. Also a cyclocross extraordinaire, Munro topped the field in the women’s U23 cross country race with a time of 1:17:19. She outlasted two other Colorado competitors at the top and 20 racers overall.

The wins give the riders an opportunity to don special stars and stripes jerseys throughout the next 12 months in competition. For Riley and Munro, that includes the UCI World Cup international mountain bike race circuit — they’ll be competing this weekend in Snowshoe, West Virginia.
