Niwot’s Anna Sallee during her No. 2 singles state championship match at the Class 4A state tournament on Saturday, May 14, 2022 in Pueblo, Colo.

Lily Chitambar, Sr., Boulder: No player in the area proved as dominant as Class 5A’s two-time No. 1 singles champion. Chitambar lost one set all season long en route to her second straight 5A crown.

Quinn Bernthal, So., Fairview: After making the jump from 3 singles as a freshman, Bernthal played her way to the 5A 1 singles title match, where she took the only set of the entire season from Chitambar.

Anna Sallee, Sr., Niwot: Sallee proved dominant among the 4A competition as her 14-2 record sat unblemished in her own classification. Her only two losses came at the hands of Cherry Creek and Fairview, so it was no surprise when she grinded out a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 battle with Pine Creek’s Manoela Amantini Quintanilha for the 2 singles crown.

Stella Laird, Fr., Fairview: Laird held incredible poise throughout her first high school season at 2 singles, tennis’ second-toughest position, as she finished her ride at that position with a 13-1 record. She played her way to the 5A state title match, only to fall to Cherry Creek’s Lorena Cedeno to earn the runner-up honor.

Elle Middleton, Jr., Fairview: Middleton fell just short of a perfect junior season when she lost to Cherry Creek’s Jiselle Boker in the Class 5A No. 3 singles title match. Prior to that second-place finish, she had defeated every single opponent she faced with a 13-0 record at 3 singles and a 6-0 record for the few matches she swung up to No. 2 singles.

Virginia Gomulka, Jr., and Lizzy Roth, Jr., Fairview: Much like Middleton, Gomulka and Roth played a flawless season until they met up with Cherry Creek’s Vivienne Bersin and Victoria Moldovan in the 1 doubles title match. They made the Bruins work hard to earn that state title as they took the match all the way to 3-6, 6-2 and 6-7 (4-7) set scores.

Clara Meisner, So., and Sarah Stonehocker, Jr., Holy Family: Meisner and Stonehocker hardly met a 1 doubles opponent they couldn’t take down, at least up until they came face-to-face with D’Evelyn’s Anna Day and Maria Christofferson in their 3A state title match. They ended the season with an 18-3 record and runner-up honors.

Maya Brakhage, So., and Jane Roth, So., Fairview: Perfection can be hard to come by in girls tennis, but Brakhage and Roth proved it can be possible. This dynamic duo defeated every single opponent that came across its path in 2022, all the way up to a state crown in the 5A 2 doubles competition.

Maya Natarajan, Jr., and Peyton Larsen, So., Peak to Peak: Natarajan and Larsen showed their true grit through tough 3A state tournament competition as they defeated two straight opponents in three-set matches, one of which went to a tie break, to play their way to the 3A title match. They fell to D’Evelyn’s Cheranne Wang and Maisy Schoeman to earn runner-up.

Kylie Horning, So., and Alesandra Wise, Sr., Holy Family: Very few No. 4 doubles teams were able to take down Horning and Wise this year through an 18-3 record, and they became even more untouchable during the Class 3A state tournament. They defeated all but one opponent in the tournament by two sets en route to a state crown.

Coach — Jim Hensley, Fairview: Hensley took over the Knights’ program from Susan Stensrud and didn’t miss a beat in continuing to uphold her legacy. His Knights kept the 5A tennis spectators on their toes until the last day of the 5A state tournament, where they finished runner-up in the team race to perennial powerhouse Cherry Creek.
