Ryan Vigil of Broomfield is looking to win a second Class 4A wrestling championship. That trek begins with regional competition next weekend.

Broomfield senior Ryan Vigil spent his Friday night up in Greeley, getting to know the University of Northern Colorado campus he may end up choosing as his next wrestling home.

There, he spent much of his time near a mat, watching former Broomfield two-time state champ and current Wyoming wrestler, Darren Green, as the Cowboys visited UNC in a dual.

“(Green) is a former teammate, a good friend of mine, and he has definitely helped out in a lot of situations,” Vigil said by phone Friday. “He’s just given me advice building up to state, just staying positive, keep pushing because it’ll all fall into place.”

The high school wrestler’s mindset never strays far from the mat this time of year, with regional wrestling tournaments upcoming next weekend, followed by the state championships at Ball Arena the following.

For Vigil, the next two weeks are a chance to repeat in gold after he won 138-pound Class 4A title last season. Now at 145s, the senior had missed the Top of the Rockies tournament last month with an ailment but returned to win the Front Range League tournament last weekend.

Morgen Watt of Broomfield, seen here during the 2020 state championships, has his eyes set on the 4A 220-pound state title.

The Eagles as a team finished atop the 12 league teams and left with four individual titles, including one from 2021 state runner-up Morgen Watt in 220s. They host the 4A West Region next Friday and Saturday.

“The kids got to realize that the state tournament starts next Friday when you weigh-in,” Broomfield coach Jimmy Zechmann said. “It starts at regionals. It’s just an extension of the state tournament down at Ball (Arena). If you don’t win next weekend, you don’t go to Ball.”

Broomfield, ranked seventh in Tim Yount’s On The Mat 4A rankings as of Saturday morning, will be joined in its region by No. 3 Falcon and No. 9 Loveland.

Vigil, ranked second in 4A 145s, will be joined by the weight’s No. 3 and 4 wrestlers in Falcon’s Tyler Valdez and Loveland’s Isaac Padgett.

“The mindset has changed a little bit but all in all it’s the same. I just want to show that I’m still the best this season,” Vigil said. “Instead of last season, I wanted to prove that I was the best.”

The Eagles have eight wrestlers ranked inside their weight classes’ top-10.

Elsewhere, Monarch, ranked fourth in 5A, will be at 5A Region 3 at Prairie View alongside Fairview.  The Coyotes have eight wrestlers ranked inside their weight’s top-eight. Cole Carlucci is No. 1 in 5A 182s, Emilio Trujillo-Deen is No. 2 in 132s, and Dillon Roman is third in 138s.

In 3A, Holy Family and its five top-10 wrestlers will host the North Region, which will also include No. 1 Mullen and No. 3 Jefferson. The Tigers are led by 3A 106 No. 2 Brayden Bach.  In 2A, Lyons is in Region 3 at Northeastern Junior College located in Sterling. It has three ranked in the top 10.
