Baseball: Holy Family advances to Class 4A state’s final day

Tigers give up lead, come back to win in eight innings over Cheyenne Mountain

Holy Family baseball has a tough hill to climb on Saturday, needing to beat Ponderosa twice in the Class 4A state tournament in order to call themselves champions.

However, given the ride they went on Friday, it’s wise not to miscalculate the grit of the local team as they head to the final day of the season.

Playing in the semifinals at Runyon Complex in Pueblo, Holy Family led Cheyenne Mountain, 3-1, going to the seventh inning before seeing the Indians tie the game at 3-3. Cheyenne Mountain would then go on to plate a run in the top of the eighth inning for a 4-3 lead.

But after leaving the bases loaded and only plating the one run, Cheyenne Mountain left the door open for Holy Family to respond and Ryan Chacon’s two-run double was that bell-answering blast. The 5-4 victory improved HFHS to 19-2 on the season, but more importantly gave them a chance to battle in the tournament against the Mustangs again.

Ponderosa is undefeated through four games, including a wild 14-11 win over Holy Family last weekend.

The teams will square off first at 12:30 p.m. at Runyon’s Hobbs Field, then play again immediately after if necessary.
