Girls tennis: Dawson in third place after first day of Class 3A state tournament

While Colorado Academy and D’Evelyn have taken a commanding lead at the Class 3A state tournament, the girls tennis teams at Dawson, Holy Family and Peak to Peak saw some success at Memorial Park in Colorado Springs on the first day of action.

Dawson was in third place with 13 points as all three singles players and a doubles team made it past their opponents in the quarterfinals. Holy Family had a great ending to the day with three doubles teams making semifinals, while Peak to Peak has two doubles teams still alive.

The Mustangs’ trio of Lila Travis (No. 1 singles), Alexis Gilio (No. 2) and Eloise Shehan (No. 3) all won both Friday matches in straight sets — though some sets were certainly closer than others. Shehan knocked Holy Family’s Laura Baker out in the quarterfinals, setting up a semifinal Saturday morning against Colorado Academy sophomore Lila Paton. Travis will face CA’s Anna Jordaan, who looked dominant in her two matches.

There will be a local representative in the No. 3 doubles championship match, as Dawson’s Anna Wittenberg and Paige Howenstein will battle Holy Family’s Sadie Bren and Sarah Stonehocker for the right to play in the title match. Other HFHS doubles teams who advanced were Audrey Brower and Clara Meisner (No. 3) and Ava Silverstein and Avery Alderman (No. 4).

Peak to Peak’s hopes of finishing top-five will rest on the doubles teams of Kendyl Fanger and Quinn Burns (No. 1) and Paris and Sophie Kiehl (No. 3).
