The year we’re likely to never forget is one we hardly want to remember.

And yet, there were times in 2020 when smiles met smiles, fists bumped fists (and maybe the occasional hug slipped in, too) and hands were raised in triumph with student athletes all over the BoCoPreps.com coverage area celebrating success in the midst of chaos and calamity.

Perhaps never more has such perseverance shown in our youth, and those who led them in some of the most influential ways. Coaches and administrators stood tall for their players, vowing to work together to ensure that games would be played for many sports in the fall when initially it didn’t appear there would be any chance for competition. Parents, too, backed up the wishes of their children, knowing how much sports means to the growth of many young individuals.

We sympathize with those who didn’t get to see any field, court, track or pool during the spring, and certainly also for those whose championship runs in basketball were cut short in March because of something way beyond their control. Those opportunities fluttered away, and the disappointment still wrenches the gut.

But as we look to 2021, we will hope for different circumstances entirely. There is reason to believe we’ll see even more smiles, fist-bumps, and triumph among our local schools’ athletic programs in the coming 12 months. Heck, we’ll even see more games played than ever before.

2021 will present our staff opportunities to capture moments like those in the gallery below, fragments of time that still made 2020 deliver.
