BOULDER — Legacy’s Braelon Tate unearthed himself from a mob of Fairview arm tackles to jettison into the end zone during the opening quarter Friday night at Christian Recht Field. From the ‘How did he do that?’ to the ‘Where’d that come from?’, he scored again minutes later thanks to a bit of trickery and some honor-roll sharp sideline running.

All in all, a good effort against the barbed-wire defense of the Knights.

But no, his lightning legs weren’t quite enough.

Fairview’s harassing defense came up with several late stops, which included three straight interceptions, and Liam O’Brien guided the offense by air and ground in a 43-32 win.

That’s 4-0 for Thomas McCartney’s bunch. Two games to go.

After Legacy (3-1) scored on back-to-back 4th-and-goal chances from the 1 to pull within 28-26 in the third quarter, O’Brien rallied the Knights to an answering TD with his arm and legs to push back ahead by two scores.

Fairview’s D then forced three straight interceptions to help seal the win. Down nine, Legacy drove inside the 10 before Liam Huber picked off Jaiden Peterson in the end zone. Aidan Christiansen had the next one. Grant Page, the next.

O’Brien iced it with a 34-yard rushing TD to make it 43-26 with 4:02 remaining.

Both teams came into Week 4 undefeated, touting two of the stingiest defenses in the state. Yet just a quarter-plus in, Tate already had more touchdowns (two) than the Knights had allowed in their first three games (one). And by half, Fairview had four touchdowns on a unit that had given up less than two per game on average.

In the win, Jay Barry caught a touchdown, returned another on the kickoff and had an interception, while O’Brien threw for two scores and ran for another.

Tate, meanwhile, finished with three scores and more than 150 yards on the ground in the loss.

An exciting game was dampened because of a gruesome leg injury to a Fairview player that forced a 20-minute delay in the third quarter. His teammates surrounded him as he was lifted onto a stretcher. He waved as he was taken into an ambulance.

Fairview, which improved to 3-0 in the 5A North League with the win, will face Horizon next Friday. Legacy, 2-1 in league, is against Poudre Saturday.
