FREDERICK – So close.

On Saturday at Frederick High School, the No. 6 seed Frederick football team appeared to have wrested control from No. 2 Pueblo South in a Class 3A semifinal when a win would have earned the Warriors their first-ever chance to play for a state championship in the sport. But the visiting Colts had proven time and again in 2019 to be a resilient group and put together and improbable game-winning drive that sent them back home to Pueblo with a 28-24 victory.

Despite coming up just a few points short of the title game, Frederick’s 2019 campaign still marked the Warriors’ first semifinals appearance since 2011 and the best record in the program’s long history.

“It was just special getting to spend this season with everybody I grew up with,” Frederick senior quarterback Jake Green said. “No one expected us to make it this far so it was a good feeling knowing that we did and that we could have been the first team ever to do it. It was just a great feeling while it lasted.”

Green ran for 82 yards and a pair of first-half touchdowns on Saturday. His two scores combined with a 25-yard field goal from Luke Dunker gave the Warriors (11-2) a 17-14 halftime lead.

Colts quarterback Logan Petit’s second of three touchdown passes to Jackson Dickerson gave Pueblo South a 21-17 lead after three quarters before Dominik Schleif restored the Frederick lead, 24-21, on a 5-yard scoring run with 9 minutes, 40 seconds left in the game. The Colts (12-1) fumbled on their next drive and Frederick’s Jackson Ramer recovered the ball at midfield, but nearly 30 yards of penalties killed the potential game-clinching drive and the Warriors turned the ball over on downs.

The Colts took over deep in their own territory with 3:24 left on the clock and drove the ball down the field with long passing plays to Dickerson and Luke Guarienti. On fourth down at the Frederick 12-yard line, Pueblo South decided not to attempt a game-tying field goal and Petit hooked up with Dickerson for the game-winning touchdown pass with 15.7 seconds left.

“Overall, I think it was a good game,” Green said. “Obviously, it didn’t go our way and that upsets us. But the sun is going to come up tomorrow and we’re going to move on. They’re just one heck of a team. It was awesome doing battle with them and with my brothers this season.”

Frederick’s Brandon Hornby ran for 75 yards and caught three passes for 55 yards from Green, who finished the day 9-for-11 for 156 yards.

Pueblo South will play the winner of the opposite semifinal between Green Mountain and Palmer Ridge in the state championship game next Saturday at CSU-Pueblo.
