Jake Chelser’s top-10 individual finish helped the Frederick Warriors boys golf team to a fourth-place standing at the two-day Class 4A state tournament in Montrose. It’s the best the Warriors have ever finished, with four seniors leading the way.
Chesler and Colton Gabbard were both very strong on the second day of the tournament at The Bridges, with scores of 74 and 75, respectively, in their closing rounds. After ballooning to as much as plus-5, Chesler worked himself back into the top 10 with birdies on two of his final four holes played. For Gabbard, it was his front nine where he excelled — making birdies on both the fourth and fifth holes to drop to 2-under at one point on the day. He eventually gave some shots back, but finished in a tie for 21st place.
Nick Formby and Joe Cartelli also represented the Warriors at the tournament.
Elsewhere, Longmont’s Adam Gannon, Silver Creek’s Ben Harding and Erie’s Braden Caffarelli each finished Tuesday’s rounds with improvement from Monday. Gannon was 30th, Harding 35th and Caffarelli 37th. Gannon was 3-under at one point in the round before a tough back nine.
