LYONS – Longmont’s Connor McCormick played football in 2018 but after experiencing immediate success during the track and field season this past spring, he decided to switch things up and give cross country a try for his sophomore year.

Mr. McCormick, you may have found your true calling.

Competing in a loaded St. Vrain Invitational at Lyons Senior/Middle on Saturday, McCormick placed sixth overall in a field of 283 runners with a time of 16 minutes, 23 seconds. Not too shabby for the kid’s fourth cross country race ever.

“I had a pretty good race and I think I PR’d by a couple seconds,” McCormick said. “There’s obviously really good competition here so I feel good about it. I’m starting to get to know the sport of cross country.”

Dakota’s Ridge’s Connor Ohlson, one of the top runners is the nation, finished first in the 4A/5A race. His impressive time of 15:40 was still 35 seconds off the course record 15:15 shared by Denver East’s Cerake Geberkidane (2014) and Lyons’ Paul Roberts (2015).

A chance to compete against that class of runner inspired Paul Roberts’ younger brother, Isaac Roberts, to enter Saturday’s 4A/5A race despite being the only runner from a Class 2A school to do so. The three-time 2A state medalist placed 10th in 16:33, less than a second behind Niwot’s Zane Bergen and one second ahead of Monarch’s Henry Little.

“I just wanted to have some more competition and try to get a little better of a time,” Isaac said. “That was my first race back this season after having stress reactions in my shins after track season. I had to take about a month off and then slowly come back, so today wasn’t too bad.”

Bergen’s Cougars and Little’s Coyotes placed second and third, respectively, behind a dominant Dakota Ridge squad in the 4A/5A boys team competition. Even without Roberts, the Lyons boys still finished runners-up to Liberty Common in the 2A/3A team competition.

In the 2A/3A boys race, Peak to Peak senior William Ledden, who battled his own shin problems at the beginning of September and got sick once he finally got over them, placed third. Considering it was his first workout in nine days, Ledden said his time of 17:01 wasn’t too disappointing.

“On the positive side, I’m super grateful I was able to come out with the team and race,” Ledden said. “This is one of my favorite courses. It was a last-minute choice to run this race a see where I was at, and I’m glad I came out here and gave it an effort.”

Lyons’ Simon Stone was fourth in the 2A/3A race with a time of 17:10. Jefferson Academy’s Jacob Crookston (17:17) and Evan Mills (17:27) were sixth and seventh, respectively.
