BROOMFIELD — Well, the 2019 campaign has been a so-far, so-good type of deal for the Broomfield football team.
In Week 1, the Eagles defeated cross-town rival Legacy, 34-13, to keep the Mayor’s Cup at Broomfield High for the foreseeable future. Then on Friday night, the No. 4-ranked Eagles rolled right into Week 2, defeating No. 2-ranked defending Class 4A state champion Loveland, 38-12.
That’s a pretty good start.
“I’m proud of the way the guys have been focused in practice and preparing,” Eagles head coach Blair Hubbard said. “I felt like last year after we beat Legacy in a big emotional win, we had a bit of a letdown going up to Loveland. But our senior class has really done a great job of leading and keeping us grounded so we don’t have those letdowns. That’s been the key to our success in the past.”

The Eagles (2-0) and Indians (0-1) have plenty of history between them.
Loveland won last season’s regular-season meeting, 47-0. In 2017, Broomfield knocked the Indians out of the playoffs with a 28-27 nail-biter. Back in 2016, the Eagles shut out the Indians, 14-0, during the regular season.
By halftime of the latest contest between the two northern Colorado squads, Broomfield led 31-6 on the strength of a Caden Peters rushing touchdown, a 96-yard kickoff return by Trey Ortega, a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Zachary Kapushion, and a 48-yard field goal by Matthew Eich.
Hubbard, whose Eagles never trailed on Friday night, said he wasn’t thrilled with his team’s second half. But Broomfield did enough to maintain the margin it built throughout the first two quarters and left Elizabeth Kennedy Field with a victory.
“I felt like we executed really well in the first half,” Hubbard said. “I though Kap threw the ball really well and we gave him time to throw the ball when we needed to. The big thing was that when we put ourselves in some holes with penalties, we were able to dig ourselves out of those holes.

“I wish we would have come out of that locker room at halftime with a better mindset. We really wanted to come out and just finish them off because that’s something we’re really focusing on for the rest of the season: finishing teams off.”
The Eagles have now outscored their first two opponents 72-25.
Broomfield is back in action next Saturday with a Noon contest on the road against Standley Lake in Westminster. Loveland will take on cross-town rival Thompson Valley at home next Friday.
