Girls golf: JA’s Braecklein in contention after first round of 3A state tournament

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

Jefferson Academy’s Aubri Braecklein is just four shots back of the leader and tied for second place after the first round of the Class 3A state golf tournament being played in Vail.

The forecast calls for snow in the area of Eagle Ranch Golf Course on Tuesday, but for now the second round is slated to begin as scheduled with regular tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. Should the weather impede the tournament from resuming Tuesday, in all likelihood a champion would be named based off first-round results.

But Braecklein can put her hopes in a possible second round knowing she is within striking distance of Colorado Academy’s Caroline Jordaan, who was the only player under par (-1) on Monday. Braecklein shot 3-over 75, tied with Kent Denver’s Charlotte Hillary. Rifle’s Masi Smith is fourth at 5-over 77.

Braecklein’s round included two birdies, three bogeys and one double-bogey. Between hole Nos. 6 and 16, she had a stretch of 2-under play.

The Jaguars sent their whole team to the tournament and currently sit in fourth place, a collective 53 strokes over par. Colorado Academy is in first place at 14-over.
