LAKEWOOD — Nothing could stop the Silver Creek girls soccer team on Wednesday — not a fender-bender or the No. 1 seed in Class 4A.

The No. 8 Raptors were determined to return to the state semifinals, and thanks to an opportunistic goal and some great saves by Natalie Schauer they’re doing just that after knocking off D’Evelyn, 1-0, at Lakewood Memorial Field.

Silver Creek (16-1-1) plays either Cheyenne Mountain or Wheat Ridge on Saturday with a trip to the finals on the line.

“We’ve all been looking forward to this because we made it so far last year and lost in the semis so we knew this was our year,” junior Alexa Karsel said.

Karsel made sure of it with a goal at the 55-minute mark. The Jaguars (13-2-2) had dominated possession time and had tested Schauer from the first minutes but it was Silver Creek that took advantage. It happened on what looked like an innocent rush, but Karsel worked her way around the defender, saw a sliver of an opening on the short side and beat D’Evelyn goalkeeper Kiera Hess.

It was one of the few scoring chances for the Raptors and it was game-changing.

“We only had a couple of looks and she buried one of them,” Silver Creek head coach Rob Johnson said.

The Jaguars pressed for the equalizer in the last 25 minutes, and almost had it in the 77th minute when Lauren Cook chased down a ball headed toward the Silver Creek net as Schauer took a chance and went after it, too. Schauer got there first and covered it up.

“I hesitated at first and then I thought, ‘Let’s give ’em hell and go for it,’” said Schauer, who also made a diving stop on the line in the second minute.

It was a fitting ending considering how the day started. Soon after the Raptors’ bus headed to Lakewood it was rear-ended on Highway 52 when a car hit the vehicle behind and went into the back of the bus.

No one was hurt but it was a strange start to the afternoon.

“We hear the noise and feel a little bump,” Johnson said. “The girls were a little freaked out but then realized everything is great. Our other goalkeeper had a fireman’s hat on so we were fine.”

The girls took it in stride and used it for motivation.

“Annalise Teasdale said, ‘I guess the worst is behind us’,” Schauer said. “’We’ve already gotten in a car crash so it can only get better from here.’”

It did, and the Raptors are again headed to the state semifinals.
