Boys swimming: Silver Creek places second at Mountain View Invitational

LOVELAND — For some boys swim teams Saturday, their top athletes came to Loveland to put the pieces together for a late push toward league meets as well as state meets. For others, they were focused on getting some swimmers to qualify for state in one of the last meets of the season.

Despite many top swimmers not competing, plenty was on the line for all the schools at the Mountain View Last Chance Meet.

“I think this shows how we’re going to do at conference and state,” Silver Creek’s Ian Curd said. “This is a good indicator of where you’re at. I’m feeling good and I swam my best time in the 50 (freestyle) today, so I’m excited about that.”

Curd had a strong day for Silver Creek with a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle and a fifth-place swim in the 100 freestyle at the Mountain View Aquatic Center. He also swam on relays for the team.

A handful of top swimmers and divers were competing for Silver Creek, which resulted in the team finishing second just behind powerhouse Fossil Ridge of the Class 5A ranks. The Raptors scored 757 points on the day.

Broomfield was another team to send some of its top swimmers to compete, led by Harrison Lierz. The junior stormed through the competition in the 200 freestyle to win by more than 10 seconds. His dominant day continued with a win in the 100 butterfly and his anchor leg in the 400 freestyle relay which helped the team take first place.

Saturday was a chance to see how comfortable Lierz was in certain events and if they will be ones he will compete in at state, he said.

“If I want to swim something at state that I’m not sure about, I swim it here,” Lierz explained. “The 200 freestyle is honestly a maybe right now. I’m leaning towards the 200 IM (for state).”

While Lierz won the 200 freestyle with ease, Sam Anderson also won big for Broomfield in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.23. Anderson would later return to the pool to win the 100 freestyle and swim with Lierz in the 400 freestyle relay to cap a strong day for him as well.

Saturday’s meet also served as a good preview of the league meet for Broomfield, Silver Creek and Longmont. The majority of the teams in the Class 4A Northern League were in the meet and are scheduled to meet each other at the same pool in a couple of weeks.

When the teams return May 10-11 for league, all are expected to be at full strength. With four of the top 10 teams in Class 4A competing the Northern League, it will also serve as a good preview for what could follow at state.

“Right now we just train hard,” Lierz said. “I don’t want to think too much about what’s coming up. If I over-think it, I’m not going to have a good swim. It’s all about training hard and having fun now.”

One team that sent a number of swimmers to get some work in outside of the Class 4A Northern League were the Monarch Coyotes. A few top distance swimmers competed and placed in the meet, led by Jake Fassora and Ethan Hendricks. Both finished in the top three in the 500 freestyle and Fassora was also third in the 200 IM. The team also had two relays in the final heat of the 400 freestyle relay and placed throughout certain events in the top 10.
