Baseball: Peak to Peak on the brink of first league title in program history

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

LAFAYETTE — Peak to Peak pitcher Garrett Shriver continued his magnificent junior campaign with another dominant performance on the mound Saturday.

With him going like this, and if the Pumas can keep firing from the plate, a first-of-a-kind celebration could be in store very soon.

Shriver struck out 10 in an 11-1 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Jefferson Academy, Riley Feddema drove in four runs and helped close things out on the mound in an 8-7 victory in the second, and Peak to Peak climbed within a win from clinching its first league title in program history.

The pair of wins have the Pumas (13-4, 10-1 3A Metro League) one game ahead of Colorado Academy (13-3, 8-2) and Lutheran (8-7, 8-2), who both swept doubleheaders elsewhere Saturday. With Peak to Peak beating both of them earlier in the season, one more win would secure its first title, confirmed coach Matthew Castilleja.

The Pumas have two league games remaining with SkyView Academy Tuesday and Bishop Machebeuf Thursday.

“Our school is normally perceived as a strong academic school and not athletic,” Shriver said. “For us to be able to win league would mean a lot to all of us. It’s finally showing we are worth it and we can compete with all of these good teams. It would just mean a ton.”

Shriver has certainly done his part with a team-high 39 innings, six wins and an ERA dipped all the way down to 1.62.

In Game 1, the junior struck out at least 10 batters for a third time this season while allowing just two hits and one unearned run. At the plate, he helped his own cause with two hits and a pair of RBIs, while Zach Yeakley delivered a game-high three RBIs.

“These kids are fighters, they are resilent,” said Castilleja, whose team bounced back from a 17-6 loss in eight innings to Faith Christian Thursday.

In Game 2, Feddema tied his career high with four RBIs, which included a bases-clearing triple as part of a four-run fifth. He also earned the save in the team’s fourth one-run win of the season.

Starter Isaac Van Tol worked around three errors behind him and allowed seven runs — just two earned — over 5 2/3 innings. He was relieved by Feddema with an 8-6 lead and two outs and runners on the corners in the sixth.

Grant Anderson raced home from third on a passed ball to make it 8-7 before Feddema induced a groundout on the next pitch to preserve the lead. The sophomore then returned to the mound in the seventh and stranded runners on the corners.

“I was kind of nervous at first, but I remember my coach telling me to go up, deep breaths, just throw the ball and have fun,” Feddema said.

Jefferson Academy (8-5, 5-4) fell out of the league chase with the losses. Jags coach Eugene Carbajal was complimentary of Castilleja and the job he’s done in his first year in charge. His own team, however, he said has some major hurdles to clear.

“We’re just not very tough right now,” he said. “I don’t know if we can learn that, but that’s what we have to learn. We got to be tougher mentally and we got to have some guts, and right now we don’t. I give Matthew (Castilleja) credit, he’s getting the most out of his talent. He’s doing a great job. We are not.”

The Pumas came into the day ranked sixth in 3A RPI. The Jags were eighth.
