LONGMONT — Niwot’s Taylor James and Mead’s Abbey Glynn put on quite a show of their own at the Lonnie Nixon Boulder County Championships Saturday.

James won three events, Glynn broke two individual meet records and led the Mavericks’ sprint medley to another, as the two showcased their glossy talent at Everly-Montgomery Field in the 43rd running of the area’s most prestigious track and field meet.

Head-to-head, Glynn edged out James in the 400 with a time of 54.79 seconds to 54.93. Both marks eclipsed Niwot’s Mary Gillett’s 2018 record of 55.46 and the previous stadium record set by Middle Park’s Samantha Berggren (55.69) in 2011. James came back to win the 200 in 25.23 over Glynn, who finished third (25.65) behind Monarch’s Mia Manson (25.61).

Afterward, James was named the girls’ most valuable athlete after winning the 200, the 1,600 (4:59.35) and high jump (5 feet, 3 inches). Glynn took home the award for the girls’ most outstanding performance, topping the field in the 400 and 300 hurdles (44.11), while anchoring the medley (1.48.90).

The two were just happy getting to know each other during the day.

“Today was the first time we’d ever talked in person or ran against each other,” Glynn said. “I think it was that friendly competition that got us both to the end.”

Niwot finished as team winners in both the boys and girls competitions.

Nolan Johan was named the boys’ most valuable athlete after leading the Cougars to their first boys crown at the championships in school history. A year after he said he missed most of the season with a hamstring injury, Johan won the 110 hurdles (15.29) and 300 hurdles (40.12) before ensuring a team victory by helping the 1,600 relay (3:24.73) to a win in the final running event of the day.

“We’ve really started to turn it around the last couple of the years,” said Johan, who was also a part of the team’s third-place finish in the 800 relay (1:31.517). “It feels good. It hasn’t really sunk in that it’s our first-ever (title at the Boulder County Championships).”

The girls at Niwot won their 11th crown in the meet’s existence and 10th straight, thanks in large part to James’ dynamic performance. The sophomore, who has competed in the high jump and everything from the 100-to-1,600 this season, is certainly ‘wow’ material with her top-level ability in each of the distance, sprints and field phases.

As for state, last year she took home titles in the 800 and 1,600 relay as a freshman. This year, however, she’s still not sure which four events she’ll take part in.

Any combination will probably work just fine.

“I honestly have no idea,” James said, grinning. “I know the coaches will put me in the best position to get as many points as I can for the team. And that’s all I’m looking for.”

Niwot coach Maurice Henriques raved over James — and raved over Johan. He beamed over his boys and girls, too. This was a big deal for the Cougars.

“Since I’ve been at Niwot, this has been big,” Henriques said. “When I was a coach at Fairview in (2003-07) Boulder County Championships was the meet. You wanted to win this meet because of all your local schools. Once I got to Niwot, we actually treat this meet more important than we treat conference. This meet and state, that’s it.”

Six meet records fell on a sunny, and at times, lightly windy day in Longmont. Peak to Peak broke a meet record in the girls’ 3,200 relay (9:18.37) and Niwot did the same in the boys’ relay (7:55.58). Max Manson leapt 17-3 in the pole vault.

Sixteen local schools were on hand.

“It’s pretty cool to see where you place out in all of Boulder County and all the schools you’d go against in football and all that fun stuff,” said Silver Creek’s Sam Dirkes, who swept the throwing events with a 171-02 toss in discus and a 56-08.25 throw in shot put. “It was fun.”
