BOULDER — It’s hard not to feel a bit lonely down at the throwing pit. At the Fairview Invitational, you had to go outside the track gates, past a shed and down a straight path before getting there. Only faintly could you make out the announcements over the loud speakers situated back in the infield.

Yet while it’s a sure reminder of track and field’s emphasis on individual accomplishment — back at the pit, top thrower Joy Fifita of Broomfield is doing her best to give it a more inclusive feel this season.

Known to review video of her teammates throwing on an iPad, happily giving any pointers she can, the senior swept shot put and discus with ease on Friday in what has been one of the best throwing seasons in the state.

Fifita said she has newfound focus in the sport after her fiery start to 2018 fizzled a bit by the state meet. She linked part of it to maturity and her push towards a college scholarship in the sport. Maybe even more, the team-centric senior, who duos as a national high school rugby player, found a purpose bigger than self.

“As a leader she has taken a lot of the younger kids under her wing and I think she is really relishing in that, and it helps her be more focused at practice as well,” Broomfield throws coach Jim Zechmann said. “Sometimes the best athletes are the ones who can coach their teammates. She learns more and has been able to be more technical in the event because she’s learning by instructing others.”

Fifita looked at ease behind the pit as she chatted with teammates and coaches. She then quickly flipped a switch in the ring, hurling a throw of 34 feet, 7.75 inches in shot put and a toss of 119-10.50 in discus.

The senior came in with the top shot-put mark in Class 5A at 40-03.25 and the second-best throw in discus at 129-06. She said she hopes to have a golden finish to her career after finishing the 2018 state meet 15th in shot and 16th in discus.

“I definitely think about it,” Fifita said. “The hope is to win, get first place in both. I think winning state would be super awesome for anybody.”

As a team, Broomfield swept the girls and boys competitions. Lauren Felknor won the 800 in 2 minutes, 22.25 seconds and Linnea Baldner took long jump at 16-3.25 to help lead the ladies to a score of 116.5. Dayne Ortega won the 200 in 23.17 and Ryan Capasso won the shot put at 42-11 to push the boys to 140.

Elsewhere, Mead’s Abbey Glynn won the 200 (26.20), 400 (58.09), 300 hurdles (46.11) and helped lead the Mavericks to victory in the sprint medley (1:52.29).

Despite the cold, and a few on-and-off snow flurries, Glynn looked more than comfortable. The senior is currently ranked first in 4A in the 300 hurdles and is second in the 400 (57.11) behind Niwot’s Taylor James. She finished runner-up in both events at state a year ago.

Right now, Glynn said, “I’m pushing myself in racing against the clock.”
