COMMERCE CITY — The Fairview Knights qualified two wrestlers for the Class 5A state wrestling tournament and the Centaurus Warriors will send one to the Pepsi Center next week. All three qualified for state for the first time in their high school careers.
Both teams were part of the field in the 5A Region 2 tournament at Adams City High School on Saturday.
Leading the trio was Nathan Uribes of Centaurus, the only local athlete to compete for a regional championship. The senior won his quarterfinal match on Friday by fall in the third period to advance to the semifinals Saturday afternoon. Facing Yao Boguhe of Fairview, he trailed 7-3 in the second period before escaping to neutral position, scoring a takedown and securing the pin at the 3:31 mark. He would go on to face Joe Renner of Grandview in the championship match, losing by fall in the second period to finish in second place.
“It feels pretty good,” Uribes said. “I had a pretty hard season with injuries, really the team in general did. It feels good to get us to state and have someone (from Centaurus) qualify.”
Uribes would be the only one to qualify for the state tournament for the Warriors. Shane Ditlow did reach the semifinal round but would go on to finish in fifth place at 220 pounds and did not get the chance to wrestle back for a state bid.
Fairview qualified two wrestlers after suffering a tough semifinal round on Saturday. All four wrestlers that were in the semifinals lost in that round and were bounced to the consolation bracket. Lex Minnear had the toughest loss with a 6-4 defeat in sudden victory at 170 and Brock Granberg dropped a 4-1 decision at 152. Boguhe and Soren Robinson each lost their semifinal match by fall.
Bouncing back in the consolation bracket were Minnear and Granberg with two impressive wins to reach the third-place match. Granberg landed a hard takedown of Colin Matthews of Ponderosa that led him to win by fall in the second period while Minnear worked from top position to roll Aaron Marnolejo of Smoky Hill over for a second-period fall.
“My coach talked to me after my loss and pumped me up quite a bit,” Granberg said. “I just need to stay aggressive and angry out there.”
The two would pick up another win in their third-place match to punch their ticket to state. Granberg scored early and often to get the 11-3 majority decision win while Minnear got a pin in the third period.
“I just kept my head in the game when it came to my third-place match,” Minnear said. “I’m going to get after it (at state). I’ve only seen it for myself, but I’m just going to get after it so people know my name.”
Brackets for the state wrestling tournament are expected to be released by the Colorado High School Activities Association on Sunday.
