LONGMONT — Beau Hostler set the tone for Broomfield with a tight victory in his regional final, and teammate Darren Green quickly followed suit.
Bryant Walker then added another and Tyler Carpenter capped off the tournament with a fourth title for the Eagles, who finished second in Class 4A Region 4 on Saturday afternoon and qualified seven wrestlers into next week’s state tournament at the Pepsi Center.
That was fun.
Now, back to work.
“I think the state tournament is its own beast,” Broomfield coach Pat DeCamillis said. “The regional tournament is so emotional because you’re qualifying … so a lot of times kids are spent before they get down there. It’s a coach’s job to keep them rolling and hopefully we’ll be able to keep this momentum rolling.”
Hostler kicked things off in the final rounds with a 3-1 win in 132s and Green pinned Skyline’s Grayden Bridwell minutes later in 138s. A bit of time went by before Walker (195) and Carpenter (285) had pins in two of the three final matches of the tournament.
“I think (seeing your teammate win) would give anyone a lot of energy,” said Green, who won his third straight regional title. “It kind of gives you that inspiration, like I want a piece of that. Especially with your teammate, you want to do as great as they do.”
Erie’s Rudy Lopez was the other big winner from the area, winning the 113-pound match in extra time over Pueblo Centennial’s Jacob Gonzales.
The match tossed and turned, with the sophomore jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first period before falling down 7-5 in the second.
Tied at 9 headed into an extra period, Lopez snapped Gonzales to the mat for a sudden-victory, 4-point takedown. It finished 13-9.
As he stood atop the podium afterward, chants of “Rudy, Rudy, Rudy!” rang down from a corner of the bleachers.
“It’s indescribable,” Lopez said. “All your fans, the coaches, everyone is just so happy for you. All the hard work is paying off.”
All five area winners will receive a No. 1 seed in their bracket at the state tournament. That’s important, at least to an extent.
For Lopez, that means he likely won’t run into the heavy favorite in his bracket, Brendon Garcia, until after a few rounds. The Pueblo County senior is looking for an immaculate fourth state title.
As DeCamillis noted, though: “It’s nice to have the No. 1 seed going into the bracket, but it doesn’t matter, you still have to wrestle. Everybody’s good down there.”
The top four wrestlers in each bracket qualified. Below is a list of the region’s qualifiers, according to Trackwrestling.com.
