Girls swimming: St. Vrain teams hoping City Meet boosts final stretch

Late into Saturday night at the Mountain View Aquatic Center in Loveland, the Niwot Cougars and Silver Creek Raptors were engaged in an unusual battle in the swimming pool.

Unusual in the sense that, not often are prep swim teams competing past 9 p.m. on a Saturday night. The battle between the two teams, however, was quite similar to the past couple of seasons, where both squads showed their depth against each other while having a little bit of fun.

Silver Creek’s depth ultimately tipped the scales in its favor at the St. Vrain Valley All City Swim Meet, but for Niwot, SCHS and all three other schools that were part of the meet — Longmont, Erie and Skyline — the final stretch of the season arrived with a bang.

Not all the teams will be competing in the same league meets about two weeks from now — even Niwot and Silver Creek will take to separate pools for league championships — but with the state meets about three weeks away (Feb. 7-9), the All City Meet got the juices flowing.

“Our girls really did great things, even though we didn’t end up winning the meet,” Niwot head coach Sarah Stamp said on Monday. “We won a lot of the individual events, which speaks to the top of our group … but those third and fourth place swimmers for us were moving up on times. We had a lot of top-eight girls come out and show their strengths.”

Silver Creek took the top three places in diving, which arguably was the difference in the Raptors winning the meet with 696 points. Those three divers were Kathy Weygandt, Micaela Kimmett and Alexandra Smith.

Niwot was second with 636, and Longmont followed with 387 points.

The Cougars had two girls, — junior Abbie Shaw and freshman Mary Codevilla — win a pair of individual events. Shaw, despite being ill, won the 100 freestyle (in 54.36 seconds) and 100 backstroke (58.27 seconds) and also helped NHS win the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

“Every time I show up to a meet I want to leave it all out there in the pool,” Shaw said on Monday. “Having my team support me was huge.

We’re pleased with the results because we worked hard, showed up and won most events. We have some really good freshmen and I’m really excited to see what they can do these next couple of weeks.”

Niwot swept the top three places of the individual medley — Codevilla led the way with a time of 2:09.78. Emiley Yie won the 500 freestyle.

Silver Creek’s veteran Madison Black won the 50 free, and the Raptors also took first in the 200 free relay while boasting 16 top-three posts.

Longmont’s Lucy Matheson won the 200 free — an event she won at state last year in Class 3A — and Erie’s Payten Irwin dominated the 100 butterfly and looks to be a serious contender for an individual state title in that event for the first-year Tigers.
