Boys basketball: Prospect Ridge use big second half to oust Jefferson Academy

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

BROOMFIELD — The Propsect Ridge Academy boys basketball team outscored Jefferson Academy 20-9 in the third quarter to overcome a slow start and take a three-point lead into the fourth on Tuesday night at JA. The Miners would never relinquish the lead and went on to defeat the Jaguars 48-42, snapping a six-game losing streak in the process.

“In the past, we haven’t been winning a lot, but I feel this team really wants to change that right now,” Miners senior Austin Leopold said. “We’re trying to set a new course for the program, so it feels good to get this win.”

Communication on defense and switching screens allowed the Miners to contest more shots and prevent easy looks at the rim in the second half. Jefferson Academy did lead by double digits in the second quarter, but a small run late cut the lead to 28-20 just before the half.

In the third quarter, the Miners got after it on both ends of the court, erasing a lead with a late scoring run and stifling effort on defense.

“We just picked up the intensity,” Leopold said. “We switched and talked on defense, and then we pushed it on offense. Everything came from the defense.”

The lead would remain with the Miners through the fourth with the two teams trading shots early and the Miners getting couple of stops and free throws late to secure the win.

Leopold led the team with 18 points and came into the game looking to snap the team’s losing streak with a league win.

“I just want to do whatever the team needs,” Leopold said. “Whether it’s scoring or passing or rebounding, I’m just trying to do what the team needs (to win).”

Joey Sager also reached double figures with 12 points for the Miners. Riley Welsch was the lone scorer in double figures for the Jaguars with 12. The Jaguars are now on a four-game losing streak after winning the first eight games of the season.

Prospect Ridge Academy will travel to Denver on Thursday to face Manual — now looking to build off their first win since Dec. 7.

“I think we can compete with anyone in this league,” Leopold said.
