The sure-handed touch of junior Joe Cartelli left little room for doubt in the Warriors’ latest win on Thursday.

Cartelli matched his season-high in points with 18 by the break and finished with 25, and Frederick soared past Weld Central 82-68 for its fourth straight win.

Cartelli cut through the lane with consistency, slicing through the defense for one lay-in after another as the Warriors jumped out to a 26-point lead in the first half. He showed his range, too — swishing his second 3 of the night in the waning seconds of the third quarter to increase the advantage to 65-38.

Jacob Green added 20 points for Frederick (5-2), which has five wins in the opening month of the season after going 1-22 a season ago. The last time the Warriors had five wins before the holiday break was during the 2013-14 season when they finished 18-7 and advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

“These kids have worked so hard,” Frederick coach Enoch Miller said. “After last year they were really down on themselves and frustrated. They knew they were better than what we played but also knew it was a lot of their first year of varsity experience.”

Miller said his team is playing faster than last season. His team isn’t big, so instead he wants to utilize the speed of his guards.

So far, so good.

Frederick will not play another game until Jan. 3.

Going into the holiday break, Miller said his team will practice Friday before volunteering Saturday. Miller said the Warriors will prepare meals for needy families.
