The Skyline Falcons traveled to a tough destination on Saturday, looking for an upset they always knew they could pull off. As the No. 9 seed in the Class 4A playoffs coming out of the Longs Peak League, the Falcons felt tested as they headed to Pueblo to take on the No. 8 seed Pueblo West Cyclones.
With grit and determination, Skyline pounced on PWHS early and held on for a 32-23 victory, sealing a quarterfinal matchup with No. 1 seed Pine Creek next weekend. Skyline led 20-7 after the first half, responded with Pueblo West pushed and held on for the final 10 minutes to improve to 8-3.
Jeremy Hollingsworth scored three touchdowns and Chase Silva threw two touchdown passes — one to former quarterback Nate McGregor — to provide the offense. Jack Wathen also had over 100 receiving yards and a touchdown.
It was Skyline’s first playoff win since 1999, when they made it all the way to the championship game against Green Mountain.
No. 7 Discovery Canyon 34, No. 10 Frederick 31 (2OT)
Down at District 20 Stadium in Colorado Springs, the Warriors gave the Thunder all it could handle — and then some — as the contest took two overtime periods to decide.
Frederick, who finishes 8-3, held a 21-7 halftime lead before DCHS made a comeback, and the Thunder scored in its first overtime on a 9-yard rushing touchdown. Frederick responded with Brandon Hornby’s 1-yard plunge.
With the ball first in the second overtime, Luke Dunker hit a field goal to regain the lead for FHS. However, Discovery Canyon claimed the victory with a Marshall Pike 3-yard run, putting the Thunder in the quarterfinals where they will play No. 2 seed Pueblo East.
