DENVER — When a prep tennis player makes his debut at the Colorado Class 5A state championships, it often comes along with a fair amount of defeat and hard-learned lessons.

That wasn’t the case for Broomfield junior Austin Kattenhorn.

On Day 1 of the state tournament at Gates Tennis Center on Thursday, Kattenhorn not only escaped the first round of the No. 2 singles bracket unscathed but won a second match to advance to Friday’s semifinals. Not bad for a newcomer unaccustomed to the sights, sounds and pressure of the state tournament.

“Especially since this is my first time, it’s been great,” Kattenhorn said. “I’m having a really good time. And the guy I play tomorrow, I played him at regionals and I won so I feel confident that I can keep it going.”

In the first round on Thursday, Kattenhorn cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pine Creek’s Kyle Ma. In the quarterfinals, he took on a familiar face in Boulder sophomore Alex McCoy and the players’ familiarity with one another helped them play a thrilling three-set match.

Kattenhorn took the first set from McCoy, winning 7-5. McCoy rebounded to win the 6-3 in the second set and appeared to be in control of the third before Kattenhorn came from behind to win 7-5.

“I won the first set and was settling in so I was feeling pretty good but he started destroying me in the second set,” Kattenhorn said. “In the third set, I even went down one-four, 15-40 at one point and I was telling myself that it was all over. But I got back in it and won.”

Kattenhorn’s Eagles teammates Jack and Charlie Vanderberg also reached the semifinals, defeating Monarch’s Noah and Alex Messman, 6-0, 7-6 in the No. 1 doubles quarterfinals. At No. 2 doubles, Eagles players Will Darkey and Henry Kuhna had their quarterfinals match postponed until Friday morning because it began to rain late on Thursday afternoon.

The No. 4 doubles quarterfinal match between Fairview’s Maxim Kokoshinsky and Clayton Baldwin, and Monarch’s Cooper Hanley and Conner Smith, was also suspended because of rain. The Monarch Coyotes did not advance any of their ladder spots to the semifinals while Fairview, the defending team champions, advanced its Nos. 1, 2 and 3 doubles pairs to the semifinals but none of its singles players.

The Boulder Panthers also did not advance any players to the semifinals and like the others, will hope the players they lost to reach championship matches and pull them through into playback matches.

Semifinals matches will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday.
