LONGMONT — Wet conditions forced its share of chaos for the Skyline and Silver Creek offenses on Friday night at Everly-Montgomery Field.

Slippin’ and slidin’, the Falcons finally found enough of a footing to pull away.

Jack Wathen ended the offensive misery when he gathered in a short pass and sprinted untouched down the sideline for an 83-yard touchdown early in the third quarter as Skyline pulled away to beat Silver Creek 23-7 to end its two-game losing streak.

Wathen caught two touchdowns in the second half from Chase Silva, who bounced back after throwing two interceptions and just 24 yards through two quarters. And Skyline (4-2, 1-0 4A Longs Peak) scored 23 straight points following the break after being shut out in a half for the first time this season.

Afterwards, neither team wanted to use the weather as an excuse.

“I don’t want to blame it on the weather,” Wathen said pointedly. “We came out slow. … But we picked it up in the second half and it showed.”

Rain poured onto the field two hours prior to kickoff and continued sporadically over the night, making for less than ideal conditions.

Skyline’s high-octane pass attack was forced into two interceptions on its first four drives and began the game with nine runs in its first 11 plays. Silver Creek (1-5, 0-1), meanwhile, fumbled the ball three times — losing two of them— and attempted only two pass attempts through three quarters.

Late in the half, a 45-yard field goal attempt late by the Raptors slipped through the holder’s hands. And on the Falcons’ ensuing drive, a wide snap forced punter Kyle West to scramble after the loose ball before he picked it up and narrowly got it away.

“In the first half it was all slippery and the ball was all wet,” Silva admitted. “But it got better.”

And so did Skyline’s offense.

The Falcons scored 16 points in the first 7:16 of the third quarter.

Silva completed just his fifth pass of the night when he threw short to Wathen, who ran along Silver Creek’s sideline for the score with 10:19 left in the quarter. Skyline then drove inside the 10 on its next drive before settling for a short field goal by Ben Kalishar. And after Silver Creek muffed a punt, Jeremy Hollingsworth scored on a 5-yard run to make it 16-0.

“We finally got it back together and changed the mentality a little bit at the half,” Skyline coach Michael Silva said. “We got to be better than what we were regardless of conditions. We could play in the same conditions next week and we got to adjust.”

Silver Creek didn’t find its rhythm until it was too late. The Raptors crossed midfield five times but didn’t score until Dylan Johnson’s TD reception with 17 seconds remaining. The score prevented Skyline from securing its first shutout since 2016.

On top of the cruel conditions from mother nature, Silver Creek lost three players to injury and had another ejected.

“I think our defense played especially well and our offense moved the ball well at times,” Silver Creek coach Brian McGee said. “I’m really proud of the effort they put in, especially in that first half, and then overcoming the obstacles that we had in the second half with the players gone.

“It’s been a rough season, but I think we’ve improved mentally and we’ve improved physically each game and we got four more to play.”
