BOULDER — Playing against Legacy on Thursday night at Recht Field, Fairview’s Aidan Atkinson treated the crowd to a record-setting performance.

After reviewing the game film late Thursday night, the Fairview football staff determined that the junior quarterback officially completed 32 of 50 pass attempts for 687 yards and nine touchdowns. Atkinson’s passing yardage and touchdown totals are both all-time, single-game state records for 11-man football in Colorado.

“The state records are cool and all but that’s not why we play,” Atkinson said after the game. “We play to win a state championship. This was a great game. Me and my receivers, we work so hard and we practice so hard with our timing and throwing the ball. Coming out here and being able to show everybody that and put up some big numbers, it was great to show everybody what we’re all about.”

Leading the Knights to a 67-33 win, Atkinson’s 687 yards also rank him sixth all-time in the nation, according to the NFHS record book. His 2,471 yards and 32 passing touchdowns through six games are currently the most of any quarterback in the nation this season, according to

Colorado’s previous 11-man football record for single-game passing yards was 607 yards and was held by former Holy Family quarterback Chris Helbig.

Playing 6-man football, Longmont Christian’s Luke Puchino set Colorado’s all-classification records for single-game passing in 2016 with 706 yards against Briggsdale and 10 touchdowns against Mountain Valley. Atkinson’s numbers from Thursday put him second all-time in passing yards, regardless of classification, and tie him with Puchino for second all-time in touchdowns.

At halftime, Atkinson had completed 20 out of 32 pass attempts, which tied him for third most completions in a single half all-time in Colorado with Grand Junction’s Tom Beck (1989), as well as Fairview quarterbacks Taylor Tharp (’02) and Johnny Feauto (’14), each of whom did it twice.

Former Bear Creek quarterback Justin Holland set Colorado’s single-season passing yards record with 4,181 in 1998.
