BOULDER — The Fairview boys golf team put itself in a position where it just had to take care of business in the final Front Range League match on Wednesday and the conference title would belong to the Knights.

Well, the Knights took care of business.

Entering Wednesday’s league finale with a 13-stroke lead over Fossil Ridge, the Knights left no doubt by winning their final regular-season match with a four-man team score of 301 at Flatirons Golf Course. Fossil Ridge finished second with 305 and took the runner-up spot in the final conference standings.

“We have five guys who can shoot in the 70s so we felt really confidence, especially playing on our home course,” Fairview junior Will Chadwick said. “We’re hoping to win state. We’ve all been playing real solid all season so we’re hoping to finish well.”

With a young team, the Knights tied for ninth place at the Class 5A state championships last fall. When the 2018 state tournament rolls around on Oct. 1-2, the Knights hope their balance and depth will give them an edge on other top-heavy teams and allow them to improve on that finish.

While Mountain Range’s Connor Jones won Wednesday’s match with a 2-under 68 and locked up the individual league title, Fairview’s depth was on display in the team competition. The Knights landed three players in the top seven. Brett Reamon took third at 2-over, Chadwick was fourth with a 73 and Ryder Heuston, who was sixth at state a year ago, tied for seventh with a 75.

“I played pretty solid,” Chadwick said. “I didn’t make a lot of birdied but I didn’t make a lot of bogeys either. In all, it was a pretty solid round. I’m really hoping to get top 10 at state and I feel really confident going into it because I’ve had a really good season and I feel like my game is in good shape.”

By winning the Front Range League, the Knights punched their ticket to the 5A Central Regional next Monday at Legacy Ridge.

Legacy finished third in the team scoring with senior Grant Hoos leading the way in a tie for seventh with Heuston. The Lightning also finished third in the overall league standings, which will send them to the 5A Western Regional next Monday at Redlands Mesa.

Monarch’s Brayden Weiss tied for fifth place on Wednesday and the Coyotes finished fourth in the final league standings. They will head to the 5A Southern Regional next Wednesday at Murphy Creek.

Boulder end up in fifth and will join Fairview at the 5A Central Regional. Broomfield finished seventh in the conference and will join Monarch at the 5A Southern Regional.
