The 4th-seeded Broomfield Eagles and 2nd-seeded Monarch Coyotes both lost in the Class 5A Region 8 tournament on Saturday afternoon at Cherry Creek. Broomfield put up a fight but ultimately fell to the No. 1 seeded Bruins 11-7, and Monarch lost 6-4 in 13 innings against 3rd- seeded Rock Canyon.

Monarch fell behind early and came back to tie the game against the Jags in the bottom of the sixth inning, but they managed just one infield hit after that point and were unable to score in support of Andrew Morris, who moved from third base to the mound in the seventh inning and threw 6.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out nine.

“I’m super proud of my team and how they battled,” said Monarch head coach Scott Weiss. “It wasn’t the plan for Andrew to be pitching this game, but it’s win or go home. We brought him in and he gave us a chance to win in every inning. All we needed was one run with Morris on the mound. We had every chance to win the game, and it’s disappointing.”

Rock Canyon struck for a run early, as Cayden Zimmerman led off the game with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Jags stretched their lead to 3-0 in the top of the fifth, as they got two runs on a walk and back to back doubles to right field.

Monarch scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to trim the lead back to one, as Ben Cole led off the inning with a home run off the batters’ eye in centerfield and Ben Coatney scored on a wild pitch.

The Jags then got a solo home run from Wyatt Wendell in the top of the sixth to make their lead 4-2, but Monarch tied the game in the bottom of the inning as Luke Secunda scored on a passed ball and Morris walked with the bases loaded to score Cole.

After that, neither team scored for seven innings as Morris was lights-out on the mound and Monarch was unable to take advantage of their opportunities. The Coyotes’ best chance to score in extras came in the bottom of the ninth, as Jake Given reached on an infield single and stole second base. Then Secunda walked and Luke Martin flew out to deep center, allowing Given to get to third, but Nico Hartojo grounded out to short to end the inning.

As soon as Morris was pulled off the mound and moved back to third base with two outs in the top of the 13th, Rock Canyon was able to score two runs and win the ballgame. Colin White doubled off the wall in center and came around to score on a bloop single to right from Josh Terry. Terry then scored on a double to right from Garrison Niemann.

“It hurts, it hurts a lot,” Morris said. “In the end, it’s bittersweet. It’s not just about this game, it’s about the whole season. This isn’t the end for me and it isn’t the end for a lot of these guys.”

Broomfield, meanwhile, fell behind early against Cherry Creek and kept fighting, but ultimately came up short. The Eagles battled and erased a 6-2 deficit to tie the game at 6-6 and then 7-7, but their three errors were too much to overcome. Mitchell Morales doubled and homered for the Eagles in defeat.

“We didn’t play real clean. When you get to the postseason, you can’t have three errors in a game,” said Broomfield head coach Garren Estes. “We fought, but we didn’t play clean like we needed to. It’s a bummer, but it says a lot about the kids that they kept trying to come back. We have guys coming back, and for them it was good to get the experience like this and see that you have to play clean if you want to keep moving on.”
