DENVER — Possibly the thing that most differentiates Colorado high school tennis from year-round play is a team dynamic that adds a layer of camaraderie, as well as pressure, to competition.

Fairview freshman Alexis Bernthal experienced that unique atmosphere at its height during her Class 5A state tournament debut over the past few days. One of a remarkable 14 freshmen in the singles draws at this year’s tournament, Bernthal reached the No. 2 singles state championship match on Friday as the last of the Knights players still playing.

Though she lost 6-3, 6-1 to Cherry Creek freshman Eliza Hill, Bernthal said having her teammates in full force cheering her on during a valiant effort softened the blow of finishing runner-up.

“My team was supporting me throughout the whole tournament and it was fun to have the whole team behind me for that match,” Bernthal said. “I got to the finals and it was really awesome for them to stay and help me in every single way they could to get me through it. The goal for the season was to win state but I knew that it was going to be hard and Eliza Hill is a really great player. I’m still happy that I got to finals and even just that I got to state to see the atmosphere.”

Friday’s loss was the first of Bernthal’s high school career.

Knights teammate Natalie Stone, another freshman to play deep into the state tournament, reached the No. 1 singles semifinals before falling 6-1, 6-1 to Poudre senior and eventual state champion Ky Echton. The Knights duo of Katie Hirasaki and Denali Pinto reached the No. 1 doubles championship quarterfinals and No. 2 doubles pair Kylie Feliciano and Joy Ma reached the first consolation round. At a tournament where Cherry Creek ran away with the team title, the Knights placed fifth despite qualifying in just four of the seven divisions.

“We only brought six kids here, so I’m proud of how we finished,” Knights head coach Susan Stensrud said. “I’m really proud of our freshmen, who played way above their age level. Both had tough matches and both played from behind really well. Our doubles were great and I was really happy with how all of our players supported each other.”

After losing to Bernthal in the No. 2 singles quarterfinals on Thursday, Monarch freshman Marina Youngdahl won three playback matches on Friday. She defeated Grand Junction senior Manzanares, 6-2, 6-4 in the third-place match to cap an excellent state debut of her own and lead the Coyotes to 11th place in the team scoring.

Boulder’s No. 4 doubles pair Ellie Huettel and Lucie Paul played its way back to place third after falling in the championship semifinals to start the day on Friday. Huettel and Paul won 6-3, 6-4 over Denver East’s Sienna Dilworth and Katherine Stary in the third-place match. With Fiona Quinn and Sally Johnson reaching the No. 3 doubles consolation semifinals, the Panthers placed 16th.
