DENVER — In her Class 5A state tournament debut, Fairview freshman Natalie Stone spent the first day at Gates Tennis Center providing evidence to explain her billing as an underclassman that might have what it takes to win Colorado’s top bracket.

Stone’s first two rounds of state tournament play on Thursday also had their potential pitfalls.

On her way to Friday’s No. 1 singles semifinals, Stone won both matches in straight sets. One of those sets was a come-from-behind challenge in a 7-5, 6-0 quarterfinal win over Lakewood’s Olivia Desso that made the match more interesting than expected.

“It was really tight,” Stone said. “She was up in the first set and was just playing really well. I just had to dig deep and figure out how to pull out that first set. I feel like I played pretty well today and I’m as prepared as I can be for tomorrow.”

In a somewhat expected development, the Colorado High School Activities Association condensed the scheduled three-day tournament into a two-day affair that will play through to its conclusion on Friday in an effort to avoid bad weather coming in Friday night. In the semifinals, which begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, Stone will play Poudre’s Ky Echton for a shot at the championship match. Echton, a senior, has defeated Stone twice this season and accounts for her only two high school losses to date.

“It’s really just another match,” Stone said in regards to both the scheduling change and the familiar foe. “It doesn’t matter if we play on Saturday or Friday, I just love tennis. We both know what’s coming to it should be fun.”

Alexis Bernthal, another talented Fairview freshman, also played her way into the semifinals with a pair of wins at No. 2 singles on Thursday. Bernthal, who is undefeated so far this season, defeated Monarch’s Marina Youngdahl, another talented freshman, 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

“It’s my first time at state so the atmosphere was definitely really fun,” Bernthal said. “Having the team support you really fires you up and gets you excited. I was pretty nervous going into today so that helped calm my nerves and helped me stay focused.”

Youngdahl winning in the first round scored a team point for the Coyotes, who continued an upward trend the team has been on over the past several seasons. The Coyotes still have a chance for more scoring if the girls that defeated their players reach the finals and pull them through into playback matches.

“Our one singles lost a very hard match,” Monarch head coach Mark Reuter said. “But we’ve continued to improve every year from taking one line, to taking three lines, to now we’re scoring at least one point this year. We’ve also got some young girls so we’re just looking to finish out the tournament strong and stay excited about the present and the future.”

The state tournament will continue with semifinals at 8 a.m. on Friday. Playback matches will follow as courts become available.
