Frederick’s Erin Baum helped the Warriors qualify for the state tournament for the second year in a row.

WINDSOR — When the Frederick girls golf team qualified enough golfers to compete in the team competition at last year’s Class 4A state championships, it was the first time in the program’s history that the Warriors had done that.

The Warriors are going back in 2018.

At the 4A Region 3 tournament on Wednesday, the Warriors placed three golfers in the top 15 at Pelican Lakes Golf Course. With the top two teams and the next 13 individuals not belonging to those two teams qualifying for state, the Warriors finished fourth as a team but qualifying three individuals gives the Warriors the requisite number of players to score as a team at state.

“Qualifying enough for a team two years in a row just shows that we have strong leadership from our upperclassmen,” Frederick coach Chris DeSantis said. “Two of the girls that qualified were on that team last year and they’ve been fantastic leaders.”

The 4A state championships will be held at Country Club of Colorado on May 21-22 in Colorado Springs. Senior Erin Baum, who placed ninth on Wednesday with a 13-over 85, will lead the way for the Warriors. Teammate Payton Wallace placed 14th with a 97 to qualify for state and the Warriors got a pleasant surprise from freshman Olivia Fauerbach qualifying with an even 100 strokes.

Fauerbach, who returned to the sport this season following a two-year hiatus, is now the only freshman in either the boys or girls golf programs at Frederick to reach the state tournament.

“It was a pleasant surprise,” DeSantis said. “For a kid that hasn’t picked up a golf course for two years before this season and decided to give golf a second chance this season. He had some growing experiences that come with being a freshman and she’s finishing really strong.”

Also at the Region 3 tournament, Skyline’s Lexi Ekern (16th place) and Ella Movick (17th) qualified for state. Erie also qualified a pair in sophomores Madison Cantwell (13th) and Mara Wissman (17th).

Mead’s Kennalyn Peterson placed 22nd and will be an alternate for the state championships.
