Fairview's Kelsey Webster shot a 3-under 69 to win the Class 5A Central Regional Monday at South Suburban Golf Course.

Heading into regionals on Monday, Fairview’s Kelsey Webster didn’t really know what her expectations were, but she did know that her swing was feeling good.

Overcoming an aching shoulder and getting off to a great start, Webster won the Class 5A Central Regional with a 3-under 69 at South Suburban Golf Course in Centennial to not only punch her ticket to the 5A state championships at Boulder Country Club on May 21-22, but also give herself an added boost of confidence in the final month of the season.

“I’m super happy with my score,” Webster said. “I know that there are still spots where I can make improvements, especially before state. But it was a super optimistic day, for sure. I was feeling confident going into the round but today definitely boosted my confidence now that I’m starting to be able to shape the ball like I want to and my putting was excellent today.”

With big expectations for how she might close out her senior season before heading to the University of Colorado, Webster did most of her scoring by leaving herself short putts with good wedge shots into the greens. The Knights’ lone state qualifier, she birdied the first two holes she played starting on No. 14 and sat at 4-under for an eight-hole stretch during the middle of her round.

Broomfield sophomore Meghan Vogt shot a 2-over 74 at Fox Hollow to place second at the 5A Western Regional. The Eagles also qualified three other players behind Vogt and will send a four-player team the state championships for the first time since moving up to 5A.

“It’s really exciting that we got all four,” Eagles head coach Tony Ferraro said. “We’ve never done that in the 5A world. Today, we didn’t all play great but all four of our girls still played well enough to qualify. But that might be even more exciting because if we play as well as we know we can at state, I think we have a good chance to place really high.”

Niwot was another team that had a breakthrough on Monday. With Julia Solem tying for fourth at the 4A Region 4 tournament with an 84 at Highland Hills, the Cougars qualified a three-player team for the first time in their program’s short history. Their third golfer, Maya Ostrom, had to play her way out of a three-way playoff for them to do it.

“I think it’s awesome,” Niwot head coach Ed Weaver said. “I thought we had a shot when we did the homework. I figured if they played their average game, we’d be really close. They all played really well and got the job done. Our fourth girl was really close too qualifying as well.”

In Class 3A, the Jefferson Academy girls won the Region 3 tournament at the Olde Course and will send their full team to the state championships. Aubri Braecklein carded a 1-over 73 to lead the Jaguars, who finished with three players in the top 10.
