BROOMFIELD — Broomfield senior Madison Mooney’s resume is full of some pretty special accomplishments.
She was part of the Eagles state championship cross country team in 2016, and was a champion miler at Arcadia last spring.
But still, something is missing.
The one accolade that has eluded the Broomfield senior has been a Colorado state championship in track.
If her performance in the 800 meters on Saturday at a loaded 10th Annual Broomfield Shootout was any indication of what the future holds, then the University of Wisconsin-bound Mooney is destined for great things in May.
She obliterated a fantastic field in the 800 with a stellar run of 2 minutes, 22.60 seconds that was 10 seconds faster than Niwot’s Taylor James (2:21.70) and 12 better than Holy Family’s Taylor Santangelo (2:23.77).
“I just want to see how far I can push myself and see where I am, not only in Colorado, but the whole nation,” said Mooney, who will be back in California in two weeks to defend her 1,600 meter title in Arcadia. “I just want to see how far I’ll go before I head off to college.”
Said Broomfield distance coach Greg Weich: “She’s the real deal.”
After a schedule that was chock-full of events in the first few weeks of the season, Mooney — whose twin brother Michael cruised to victory in the 3,200 meters (9:20.00) and will run next season at Colorado State — ran just the one individual event on Saturday and her time was a Colorado personal best.
“Even if I don’t have any competitors running with me, I’m still racing the clock,” she said. “And that is what I was thinking of. How fast can I get this 200 down, the next 200 and then finish it off.”
The goals for Mooney, whose family transferred from Horizon three years ago and made a indelible mark on a lot of Eagles athletics, are simple.
“I want to win state for sure. I’ve gone every position you can get, I’ve gone second, third and fourth; so I just want to be on top of the podium in one or two races,” said Mooney, who also has high hopes for the Eagles 3,200 relay team.
Another one of the best performances of the day on the girls side was turned in by Niwot’s Mackenzie Fidelak. The Cougars senior, after a fourth place finish in the 100 hurdles, bounced back in the 300 to win in 46.02 seconds ahead of Glenwood Springs’ Ginny Bergstrom in 47.32
Niwot would also win the final race of the night, the 1,600 meter relay, edging Denver East at the line 3:59.74 to 4:00.49. It was the cherry on top of the Cougars’ team championship sundae. Niwot finished with 93 points ahead of Denver East’s 85 and Cherokee Trail was third with 62.
One of the feature races on the boys side was the 12th and final heat of the 400 meters. Skyline’s Jack Wathen was in the middle of the track in lane 4 and finished third in an impressive early season time of 50.87 seconds. Denver East’s Zion Wagoner was the only runner to go sub-50 seconds, winning in 49.92.
“So far this season, that’s the best competition I’ve had,” said Wathen, who will learn a lot from Saturday’s result. “In the past couple of races, I just haven’t settled down on the back stretch, I was going too hard. I think I’ve learned my limits.
“For all of us, we try to come back and hit the same marks we left off with last year and so far everyone on our team has been hitting that.”
There were a couple of area champions on Saturday, including Niwot’s Cruz Culpepper in the 800 meters. He was the only runner to break the two minute barrier, finishing in an impressive 1:56.22.
Silver Creek’s Samuel Dirkes won the discus with a throw of 155 feet, 11 inches. He was five inches better than ThunderRidge’s Austin Holt (155-6).
