The Holy Family baseball team opened 4A Tri-Valley League play with an 8-3 win over the visiting Erie Tigers on Thursday night. Holy Family scored five runs over the last three innings to pull away for the win.

“I was pleased, I think this is the first time we’ve put a complete game together,” said Holy Family head coach Marc Cowell. “We’ve struggled in the first two games, mentally we weren’t fully there and focused, but today I thought we did a good job.”

Erie struck for a run in the top of the first as Nash Phillips doubled to deep center field to lead off the game and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk to Connor Leach.

Holy Family came right back to take the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Zach Becker walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Will Brassil. Brassil then came home on an RBI single by Jordan Closen.

Holy Family then added to their lead in the second inning, as Phillip Neill singled off the Erie center fielder’s glove to score Weston Siefken.

Erie came back to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by Gavin Mendoza, but Holy Family rebounded in the bottom of the inning, scoring two more runs to take the lead for good. Davis Martinek led off the inning with a single, then Neill lined a single to right. The ball got past the right fielder, and Martinek ran through Cowell’s stop sign at third base to beat the throw and score the go-ahead run.

“I got caught at second not knowing the ball went over his head, and when I saw that it went past him, I just thought, ‘I’m scoring,'” said Martinek.

Becker then hit an RBI infield single to score Neill.

“Every time Erie got back into it or tied it, we responded, which is what I want out of these guys, so I was pleased with that,” Crowell said.

Holy Family added a few insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings on an RBI groundout from Matthew Delgado and a two-run single from Becker.

Holy Family’s Collin Kringlen picked up the win in relief, pitching 3 ⅓ hitless innings while striking out seven.

Next up, Erie will host Delta on Friday at 4 p.m., and Holy Family and Erie will play again at Erie on Saturday.
