Girls soccer: Jefferson Academy plays Standley Lake to scoreless draw

ARVADA — For the second straight year, the Jefferson Academy girls soccer team opened their season with a 0-0 draw against Standley Lake. The two teams played to a stalemate on Friday night at the North Area Athletic Complex.

“It was a great effort by both teams,” said Jaguars head coach Denise Sutton. “This has become a really good north area rivalry. We’re really happy to play these guys.”

As one might expect from an early-season game, defense won the day as both teams have had limited practice time and are still developing their chemistry offensively. The Jaguars had a number of chances to score, especially in the second half and the first overtime, but they were unable to do so.

“We just haven’t had the time behind the ball yet, to get that touch perfected. It’ll get there,” said Sutton.

“We need to work on finishing,” added junior midfielder Mira Houck. “We worked well together, it’s just that last key component that we need.”

The best chance for Jefferson Academy came in the 28th minute as Houck, a first team all-state selection last year, latched onto a through ball and found herself one on one with the Standley Lake goalkeeper, but her left-footed shot went wide right.

Senior forward Rachel Schlagel had a clean look at goal in the 67th minute, but she was facing a tough angle on the left side of the net and she dragged her shot across the face of goal and out of play.

Defensively, the Jaguars were dominant, holding the Gators to just one shot on goal.

Jefferson Academy are primed to have a good year. They’re ranked second in 3A, and they return their four leading scorers from last season’s run to the 3A state semifinals: Houck, Schlagel, senior forward Michaelah Ingalls, and junior forward Kristen Capan, as well as sophomore all-state goalkeeper Brooklynn Kirkpatrick.

“We have some things to work on, but the season has started and I’m excited,” Houck said.

Next up, the Jaguars are hosting the JA Soccer Shootout. Their first game in that tournament is against Sterling next Friday at 3:30 p.m.
