Broomfield wrestling hosted the Class 5A Region 4 tournament on Saturday, and nine of their wrestlers will be advancing to the state tournament next weekend. They finished third as a team, and four Eagles won their weight class.

“I thought we wrestled exceptionally well,” said Broomfield head coach Pat DeCamillis. “We’re taking nine kids down to the state tournament. Coming into today, I thought we could possibly get 10, but we’re taking nine. That’s still pretty darn good.”

Darren Green, a sophomore who finished second in the state at 120 pounds last year, won a regional crown by beating Randy Myers of Castle View at 132 pounds with a close 3-1 decision.

“It feels pretty good to be headed back to the state tournament,” Green said. “I’m excited to get back into it, I’ve been waiting for this since last year. I’ll be ready.”

Christain Lofton then won first place at 152 pounds, pinning Eaglecrest’s Tyler Maccagnan, and Preston Renner took first at 160 pounds, winning a 5-1 decision over Austin Kelchen of Douglas County.

The final Broomfield winner of the night was Mason Watt at 220 pounds, as he pinned Douglas County’s Micah Smith.

Also advancing to the state tournament for the Eagles were junior Presley Madril, who finished in third place at 113 pounds, sophomore Antonio Welch-Soto, who finished in fourth at 170 pounds, senior Drew Worthley, who finished in second at 182 pounds, sophomore Bryant Walker, who finished in fourth at 195 pounds, and Michael DeCamillis, who came in third at 285 pounds

Heading into the state tournament, DeCamillis said his team needs to stay confident. “We need to believe that we can do this,” he said.

“We just have to keep doing the same things, just keep working hard and taking it one match at a time, and good things will happen,” Green added.
