LONGMONT — Longmont sophomore Dallas Dye is likely going to get a few more chances to play in the Silver Creek rivalry basketball game than his mind wanted to register on Tuesday night.

However, the young man already knows all he needs to about playing as a member of the visiting team in the bandbox gym at SCHS — where everyone is close in on the action.

Put simply, things can get downright ugly on you.

It’s rising above that element and finding some sense of calm that leads to success, and Dye was among a group of LHS boys that were able to do so in a crucial stretch of time that helped forge a 66-64 win over the Raptors.

It was a matchup of two Class 4A teams looking to gain supremacy in the Northern League, and as of right now the Trojans are looking mighty with a 5-0 league mark.

“In high school, I’m only going to play these guys four times unless we see them again, and it’s just a great rivalry and I’m just glad we can come in and pull it out in the end,” said Dye, who registered six of his 14 points in a game-changing third quarter and also finished with eight rebounds off the bench. “There was no change in philosophy, we just needed to pick things up and get going in the second half. Luke (Johnson) hit some shots down the stretch, and it was just a great win.

“All my brothers did their jobs tonight.”

There were many moments Tuesday when it seemed appropriate to have some extra padding, but the rough-and-tumble first half quickly turned into quite a shooting display on the part of the Trojans, who also moved to 9-1 on the season.

As rhythmic as they had been at any one point this season, Longmont’s Luke Johnson, Calvin Seamons and Dye literally did not miss a bucket in the third quarter, combining to go 9-for-9 with a couple of free throw makes mixed in, turning a 37-35 Silver Creek lead into a 49-38 LHS advantage by the end of the frame.

Johnson’s hot shooting, a known commodity, spilled into the fourth quarter on his way to finishing with 26 points, and a couple of Oakley Dehning 3-pointers helped LHS to a 57-40 lead before the Raptors awoke from their slumber.

It was 62-49 with just four minutes left, but an and-1 from SCHS’ Charlie Belcher seemed to ignite the hosts, who were coming off a home loss against Thompson Valley.

Longmont turnovers helped usher along the rally, and Nick Eaton sandwiched 3-pointers around a pair of Johnson free throws to make it 64-58 with 50.2 seconds left before getting another turnover. A 3-point miss was followed by another Johnson free throw on the other end, and although Trent Dykema’s two-pointer with 16 seconds left made it 65-60 the Raptors couldn’t keep Johnson off the line.

“Luke really took it on as far as taking the team underneath his wing, and his dribble-drive and getting to the rim and the free throw line was a blessing for us,” Longmont coach Jeff Kloster said. “We kicked it out, Oakley and Calvin hit some big threes and all the sudden that lead kept getting bigger and bigger. Now, we need to break down film and understand, once you get that lead how do you keep that lead.”

“We knew it was going to be a dogfight … and I think we got flustered in the third quarter and just didn’t do a good job of reigning that back in,” Dykema said after leading Silver Creek with 22 points. “We need to know when teams are going on that kind of a run and try and slow things down, because we forced a lot right there.”
