Connor Akerson and the No. 1-ranked Monarch Coyotes will battle Cherry Creek Saturday afternoon in a top 10 matchup.

With the football season wrapping up on Saturday, the time has come for winter sports to officially take center stage.

In the first week already, there were some exciting games played in the area. Here is a look at just a few of the intriguing contests coming up throughout this week.

Boys basketball

Longmont at Golden, Thursday, 7 p.m.

After they open the season against Discovery Canyon the night before, the ninth-ranked Longmont Trojans will have their hands full against the preseason No. 1 team in Class 4A. The Golden Demons also knocked Longmont out in the second round of the playoffs last season and both teams will be ready for this rematch.

Girls basketball

Arvada West vs. Fairview, Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.

Ranked ninth in 5A by the preseason poll, the Fairview Knights will play their first home game of the season when Arvada West comes to town. The game will also be their first in their host Fairview Festival early season tournament.


Monarch at Cherry Creek, Saturday, 3:10 p.m.

Headlining the preseason rankings, the defending champion Monarch Coyotes are off to a 3-0 start and have allowed just one goal this season. While they will also face Lewis-Palmer on Friday night, Cherry Creek is the first top-10 team the Coyotes will play this season.

Girls swimming

Silver Creek at Brighton, Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.

After placing seventh at the 4A state championships last season, the Silver Creek Raptors are back in the hunt for another top 10 finish this year. Leading the way is senior Brandi Vu, who will be looking to put together a strong opening few weeks of the 2017-18 season.


Grandview Duals, Saturday, 6 a.m.

Broomfield, Centaurus and Mead will be hitting the road to take part in this early season tournament. With the likelihood that a handful of future state champions in the field, the competition will be fierce and all the wrestlers who take the mats will be tested.
