Class 4A semifinal
Kickoff: Saturday, 1 p.m., Dutch Clark Stadium (1050 Abriendo Ave., Pueblo)
Quick hits: The Steel City’s Colts welcome the Eagles to the famed Dutch Clark Stadium on Saturday in what could be the first-ever meeting between the two teams, as Broomfield is looking for its eighth state title game appearance overall and Pueblo South its first … Broomfield’s run to this point has been exhilarating, and in fact the Eagles are the lowest-seeded team remaining in the postseason (all classifications) … BHS had no standout performances from an offensive standpoint last week against Loveland, but Mitchell Gorman had the touchdown in overtime that was followed by Matthew Eich’s game-winning PAT kick in a 28-27 thriller … Gorman has led the team in rushing yards both playoff games, but it has been a team effort that has included several rushing touchdowns by quarterback Steven Croell … Pueblo South has been one of the state’s top offenses all year, and that hasn’t slowed in the playoffs as the Colts have outscored their two opponents 76-21 … Last week PSHS gained a 28-0 halftime lead on its way to a 35-14 win against Vista Ridge, earning its fourth-ever semifinals berth. Zach Cozzolino threw for three touchdowns and now has 44 TD passes this season … Other leaders for Pueblo South included receivers Marcell Barbee and Thomas Pannunzio (a combined 89 receptions and 31 touchdowns), and running back Steve Brock — each of the three have over 1,000 all purpose yards.
Bottom line: There’s something to be said about the experience of being in close games, and Broomfield got a taste of it last week. It’s been awhile for Pueblo South to experience any kind of hardship in a game, so don’t be surprised if the Eagles prove to be a little more comfortable if in fact they can keep it a one-score game into the fourth quarter.
