Class 3A, second round

(8) Longmont (8-3) at (1) Mead (11-0)

Kickoff: Saturday, 1 p.m.

Quick hits: This one’s been percolating all week, and it should lead up to a heated affair on Saturday at MHS. There is no doubt you’re going to want to get there early if you want a seat … Mead and Longmont were both very impressive in opening-round victories, with the Mavericks flexing their muscles against Harrison and the Trojans defending their home turf against Skyview … Longmont beat the Wolverines deep, with quarterback Oakley Dehning completing eight passes for 224 yards (28 yards per reception). Three different receivers caught TD passes — Sage Yazzie, Jaydon Elkins and Danny Nichols … Mead did what it does, rushing for more than 400 yards as a team to keep its undefeated season going … For this being a proximity rivalry, only twice have the teams met since the resurrection of Mead football in 2010. Both of those meetings have come in the past two years, including back on Sept. 22 when Mead pulled away in the second half to a 38-14 win. The Mavs had “just” 333 yards of offense, far below their season average. Three turnovers proved tough to overcome for Longmont, but the Trojans have not lost since.

Bottom line: Mead owns a 2-0 mark against Longmont, but both games have been real tight at halftime. The Trojans obviously would be better off if they got Mead on its heels, but it’s clear LHS needs to be better for 48 if they want a shot at the upset victory.
