Erie’s Zach Rees and the Tigers are hitting the road for a second-round Class 3A playoff game at Durango on Saturday.

Class 3A, second round

(5) Erie (9-2) at (13) Durango (8-3)

Kickoff: Saturday, noon

Quick hits: Erie’s reward for ousting three-time defending 3A champ Pueblo East is a 356-mile adventure to the southwestern corner of this beautiful state of ours, thanks to Durango’s upset win over Canon City that automatically got DHS a home game … It is pretty obvious there is not a lengthy history between these teams, and in fact has no record of the squads ever playing each other … Durango is currently in the same league as Pueblo East, and the Eagles defeated the Demons 38-16 in Week 6. The team has had a good run since, outscoring opponents 214-48 in five consecutive wins … If starting a sophomore quarterback is rare — Erie has sophomore Dion Lucero at the helm — then Durango must feel it has a gem in freshman Jordan Woolverton. He took over at QB in the Pueblo East game and has been great, throwing for 857 yards and eight touchdowns against one interception … Junior Dawson Marcum also has seven TD rushes in the past five games … Erie’s Noah Roper went over 2,000 yards for the season this past week, as he tallied his seventh 200-plus yard performance.

Bottom line: The trip is 10 times lengthier than anything Erie has had to do this year, and there’s no doubt the coaches will have time to go over a few last-minute details along the way. One of those details might be trying to figure out how to get more pressure on a young quarterback.
