Football: Broomfield gets revenge, upsets Windsor in a blowout

The Broomfield Eagles, the 15th seed in 4A, used a complete team effort to score an upset on Saturday over 2nd-seeded Windsor, 31-0. Windsor had beaten Broomfield 40-14 in the regular season, but it’s the Eagles who are moving on in the postseason.

“It feels great, because we get to have another week together,” said Broomfield head coach Blair Hubbard. “Since the week three game, we’re a different team. We’ve gotten healthier, and the young kids have grown up. We’ve started around six sophomores throughout the year, and those guys have really developed well.”

Eagles quarterback Steven Croell threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Broomfield offense.

Broomfield set the tone early and did not let up. On the first possession of the game, the Eagles forced a fumble deep in Windsor territory and got a 29- yard field goal out of it. They forced another fumble on the very next possession, leading to a 34-yard touchdown pass as Croell rolled to his right and found Hunter Nassar in the end zone for a 10-0 lead.

The Eagles scored twice in the second quarter, on a quarterback sneak from Croell and a 5-yard touchdown pass from Croell to Zachary Zerr.

Broomfield then completed the scoring on the first possession of the third quarter on another quarterback sneak from Croell.

Windsor’s best chance to score came with 8:04 left in the game. They were inside the 10, but two personal fouls negated a touchdown run and they came up short on 4th and goal as the Eagles preserved the shutout.

“They set the tone right away with a couple of takeaways,” said Hubbard. “They prepared hard all week long. Defensive coordinator Robby O’Brian did an outstanding job preparing them, and I’m very proud of the way they flew to the football today.”

Next week, the Eagles will host 7th- seeded Loveland, who beat 10th- seeded Ponderosa 31-6 on Friday.

“Loveland’s got a strong tradition of great playoff football. It’s going to be two smashmouth teams going at it,” Hubbard said.
