Quarterback Oakley Dehning leads one of the hottest teams in the state into the playoffs, as Longmont has won six straight. The Trojans host Skyview Friday night in the 3A first round.

Class 3A, first round

Kickoff: Friday, 7 p.m., Everly-Montgomery Field

Quick hits: After losing three straight games following an opening week win against Pueblo East, Longmont has rolled to six straight wins allowing just about 13 points a game during that time … The Trojans sustained superiority in the Northern League when the majority of its teams fell apart following injuries … Longmont’s defense has produced an astounding 34 turnovers including 19 interceptions. Nick Paone and Austin Hassler had five interceptions apiece … Drake Engelking and Jaydon Elkins have 23 touchdowns between them and LHS has converted 24 two-point conversions, which can be huge in playoffs … Skyview has had a very Skyline-like turnaround under coach Patrick Weir, as the Wolverines have gone 15-6 in his two years so far after just two winning seasons since 2004 … The schedule for SHS was rated in the bottom of half of 3A, but one can’t argue the team’s stout defense. Skyview has allowed just 112 points and are equally brilliant at creating turnovers (32 total) … Senior Deyvon Butler is a threat with 1,825 total yards and 23 touchdowns (21 rush, 2 receiving).

Bottom line: The Trojans are two years removed from an appearance in the 4A state championship game, and there are several seniors that were on that team as sophomores. Skyview has two straight shutouts, and the longer the game stays tight the more confidence the Wolverines will get.
