DENVER — As the state-qualifying ranks thinned throughout the first two rounds at the Class 5A boys tennis state championships, a number of area players rose above elimination to reach Friday’s second day.

On Day 2, however, several of them will stand in one another’s way in the semifinals as each attempts to keep his hope of winning a state title alive on the courts at Gates Tennis Center. In the case of the No. 3 singles semifinals, where Boulder senior Henry Hawk will face Fairview junior Andy Wu, the two title-hopeful opponents are also old friends.

“I’m excited for tomorrow because it should be a good match,” Hawk said. “I’ve been playing Andy since like middle school. I used to beat him but this season he’s beat me twice. But I’m really looking forward to tomorrow because I’m playing a lot better than I was earlier this year.”

Hawk dropped just eight games while winning both of his first two matches in straight sets on Thursday. Wu lost only nine games while also starting the state tournament by going 2-0 in straight sets.

Wu’s Fairview teammate Ethan Schacht will also be involved in an all-Boulder County semifinal when he takes on Broomfield exchange student Giovanni Intermesoli at No. 2 singles on Friday. Schacht, who placed fourth at No. 2 singles last season, defeated Grand Junction’s Cameron Weckerly, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

An exchange student from Italy, Intermesoli had a tougher quarters round, coming from behind to defeat Grandview’s Illijah Bailey, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and was taken to the hospital to be treated for severe cramps after the match concluded.

“I’ve played him already this season,” Schacht said. “He’s pretty consistent and I beat him last time. I think I can out-grind him. But, as always, I’m going to try to ignore my opponent and just play my game. I just look forward to playing my game tomorrow.”

With Fairview senior Tom Melville, who has a pair of top-four singles medals to his name, winning both of his matches at No. 1 singles on Thursday, and all four doubles pairs doing the same, the Knights advanced all seven of their ladder spots to the semifinals. They currently lead the team scoring with 21 points, just two points ahead of Cherry Creek.

“I feel like today was a really good day for us,” Schacht said. “We have a really good vibe going right now and I’m hoping we can finish strong.”

The semifinal round in all seven divisions will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and will be followed by playback matches. All finals and third-place matches will be played on Saturday.
