Boys golf: New faces will represent BoCo at state in two weeks

GREELEY — In so many ways, the pressure at the regional golf tournaments is so much greater than the actual state tournament.

It doesn’t matter what you do all season, if you have one bad day — and anyone that plays the game realizes that it could happen each time out — you can kiss your season good-bye.

On Tuesday at Boomerang Golf Links in the Class 4A Region 3 tournament, four local area golfers punched their ticket to the Class 4A state tournament in two weeks at Raccoon Creek G.C. in Littleton.

Longmont freshman Adam Gannon (76), Centaurus junior Nick Vaver (77), Frederick sophomore Nick Formby (78) and Silver Creek sophomore David Brett (82) each earned their spots.

Erie senior Caleb Humble just missed his chance, losing in a three-man playoff for the final two spots to a pair of Windsor golfers.

“It feels great, being that freshman coming in and being able to make it to state in my first year,” said Gannon, whose 5-over 77 was good for a fifth place finish. “I was just trying to play smart and play well.”

That was the name of the game at Boomerang, where the front nine has historically yielded a good score, even to those playing with a conservative mindset.

Gannon bogied his first two holes, but quickly righted the ship with a birdie on the par-5 third and was able to turn in 38. His only hiccup of the day came on No. 17, where a wayward drive cost him his lone double of the day.

“I definitely went a little easy on the back,” said Gannon, who is looking forward to his trip to state. “I just want to grind getting ready and hopefully play good.”

It was an interesting day for Vaver, who started on the back nine and opened with a birdie on No. 10. He was rolling right along when he quintuple bogied No. 13. He didn’t let it get into his head.

“You just have to realize that you are not out of it after one hole and that you can always make it up,” Vaver said. “Those stroke could have come anywhere and I just tried to keep my head.”

Formby, who was paired with Vaver, became the first Frederick golfer to qualify for the state tournament since 2012. He also rode the roller-coaster of emotions, going out in 6-over 42 and coming home in even-par 36.

“It means a lot for our school, given our reputation, and it just feels good because all of our sports are doing good right now,” said Formby, who made back-to-back birdies at Nos. 2 and 3. “I remember last year starting on the back nine and I knew it was the harder nine, and I knew if I could put up a decent score on the front I would be fine. I was 3-over after two and I just stayed calm.”

Brett will be the lone Silver Creek representative at state after sophomore Garrett Stansel was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.
