Following a productive summer, Dawson’s Billy Howenstein has had high expectations for this junior season since Day 1 of the 2017 campaign.

Howenstein finished 10th in Class 3A last year, so he had planned on moving up the podium this fall. Now that he’s one of the more veteran players around as an upperclassman and reigning top-10 state placer, Howenstein was focused on accomplishing the first part of his season-long goal on Monday. That meant qualifying for the state tournament out of 3A’s Region 3.

On a tough day at Estes Park Golf Course, Howenstein didn’t have his best game at regionals. But to his credit, the Mustangs junior still played more than well enough to reach the state tournament, shooting a 77 to place fourth at regionals and move on.

“The goal was definitely just to get the state,” Howenstein said. “It was really windy out in Estes this morning so the course played a lot tougher. It’s a course where I’ve played well before and I struggled a little bit, but I was able to buckle down and punch my ticket.”

Along with teammate Chase Fulkerson, who placed 18th on Monday to qualify, Howenstein will now turn his attention to the Oct. 2-3 state tournament, which will be played right down the road from Dawson School at Indian Peaks Golf Course. Also out of Region 3, Holy Family qualified a pair of golfers in Garrett Green and Alex Mumm.

Joining Dawson and Holy Family at the 3A state tournament in two weeks, Peak to Peak’s Davis Long shot a 72 to place fifth at the 3A Region 2 tournament while teammate Nishant Datta carded a 77 to place 10th. Peak to Peak’s Ian Thorpe and Ethan Tartaglia also qualified, giving the Pumas a strong contingent for state. Also at the Region 2 tournament, Prospect Ridge’s Walker Franklin and Jaxon Franklin finished in the top 10 to qualify for state.

Also at Region 3, Jacob Mason of Jefferson Academy qualified and senior Jace Repola won a playoff to earn a spot at state for the Jags.

Led by Ryder Heuston and Will Chadwick, who shot matching 74’s at Broadlands Golf Course to place fourth at the 5A Western Regional, Fairview finished second and qualified a team for state. Monarch did the same at the 5A Northern Regional, with Spencer Daake shooting a 73 at Coal Creek to lead the Coyotes in second place individually. Legacy will also be in the team competition at state after qualifying four individuals out of the Northern Regional.

Broomfield’s Carson Briggs shot a 76 at Colorado Springs Country Club to place seventh qualify out of the 5A Southern Regional. Boulder’s Freddie Gluck shot a 77 to place 10th and also qualified for state.

Led by Jack Hoover’s 73 and runner-up finish at Elmwood Golf Course, the Niwot Cougars placed second in the 4A Region 1 team scoring and qualified a team for state for the second straight year. Out of the 4A Region 4 tournament at The Bridges at Black Canyon, Mead qualified its first-ever golfers for state in Kellen Kudrna and TJ Shehee.
