LITTLETON – When Jake Laurenti juked past defenders and into the end zone with 9.6 seconds left, the Lyons Lions thought they had come away with a big road win.

The celebration ended when they saw a yellow flag on the field. A holding call pushed Lyons back to the 11, and joy turned into disappointment. .

“I definitely thought that was our game right there,” Laurenti said of his negated touchdown. “I thought we had it.”

They still had two chances, but after an incomplete pass, Alexa Karsel missed a 29-yard field goal and Front Range Christian escaped with a 14-13 win.

The Lions (1-1) were aggressive in going for the win all day. Instead of kicking a field goal on fourth-and-goal at the Falcons’ 2, head coach Jason Yantzer gave it to Laurenti. He stretched to get the first down but the strategy backfired on the holding call.

Earlier in the fourth, with Lyons trailing 14-7, Laurenti scored on a 16-yard run but Yantzer went for two and the lead. Joe McCain’s pass to Nathan King at the cone was batted down and the Lions trailed.

“I know I’m going to second guess myself all night long – on a couple of things,” Yantzer said. “When we went for two and it got batted down right at the end; we could have just kicked it with 9 seconds left. There are so many things that go through your mind.”

Lyons looked like it would run past Front Range Christian (1-1) after taking the opening drive 65 yards on 14 plays to go up 7-0 on Dante Tragella’s 1-yard run. But the Rams tightened up and used their passing game to go up 14-7 in the third.

“We thought they were going to run it all day long,” Yantzer said. “We were prepared, we go through it with practice all week but we thought we’d see a lot more run. They went to the air and exploited some stuff.”

The Lions hung tough but couldn’t get over the top.

“We were playing to the last minute and that’s all there is,” Laurenti said. “We knew this was going to be a hard game. It’s pretty disappointing but we’ve got next week to look forward to.”
