DENVER – The Legacy Lighting were dominating possession and zone time, but one free kick and the game with Columbine was tied at 1.
It shouldn’t have been, and the Lightning boys soccer team knew it. Then they did something about it, scoring three goals in a span of seven minutes to pull away from the Rebels in a 5-1 win Tuesday.
“It lit a little fire under us,” Stephen Goth said of Columbine’s lone goal. “We were dominating and then they got 1-1. We responded really well to that.”
The Lightning (2-1) had chances to be up by two or three goals after Joey Joiner had scored in the 16th minute but they missed a few chances and the Rebels goalkeeper made some saves. Then Columbine’s Cerim Palislamovic scored on a perfectly placed free kick to tie it.
It didn’t take long for Legacy to go back on top and take control. Ryan Bennett made it 2-1 just 70 seconds after Palislamovic scored, Drew Dunham scored less than two minutes later and then Joiner’s great crossing pass to the front of the net found Goth, who knocked it in.
A tie game was suddenly 4-1 and the Lightning were on their way to the win.
“We had a few missed opportunities,” Joiner said. “We were dominating the ball but we need to work on our finishing and those goals will be there.”
The Rebels had no answer, although Palislamovic came close in the second half but was denied by Brandon Hansen on a penalty kick.
“If memory serves we haven’t conceded a single goal on a play,” coach Tony Romano said. “It’s a set piece here, a set piece there. It’s good to see guys defending well but we have to reduce the fouls that create those chances.”
Romano was happy with the win but was looking for a more consistent effort, even this early in the season.
“There was a good period of time when we found another gear and took it to another level. We need that higher gear for 80 minutes because 40 minutes isn’t going to get it done against Boulder and Broomfield,” he said.
